Practising offline

While you still have a connection, open Offline practice, pick a lesson from the list and choose Download sample. The clip and its script are kept on this device, so the same page works on the train or in aeroplane mode. Offline practice covers each lesson's free listening sample, the same clip as the first guided dictation, not the whole lesson.

Download samples before you lose signal

1. Sign in first if you want your results to count towards your account (see below).
2. Open Offline practice: signed in, it's under More tools and settings on your practice pages and on Today's practice, or type microenglish.com/practice-offline into your browser. Bookmark it, because you'll open it with no connection later.
3. Choose a lesson in the list and choose Download sample. Wait for "Ready offline".
4. Repeat for the lessons you want. Each sample is one short clip per recorded accent, so even the full set is only a few megabytes. The page keeps up to 24 samples and tells you when to remove one before adding another.

Practise without a connection

Open the same page. Every downloaded sample has its own player, a choice of accent (British, American or Australian, whichever were recorded for that clip), a box to type what you hear and Compare with script. Compare shows the script under your answer so you can check the words yourself; there's no score while you're offline. Your answer is kept on the device ("Saved on this device.").

What offline practice leaves out

• Server-checked scores, hints and word-by-word feedback. Offline, you compare the words yourself.
• The rest of the lesson: the Learn guide, the member clips and the Test tab stay online. Paid exercises are not included.
• Speaking Beta, which needs a connection to check your recording.
• Results as a guest. Only samples you start while signed in can sync later.

Sync your results

Back online, open Offline practice and choose Sync my offline results. Each saved answer is scored on the server and counted as Synced offline samples on your Weekly report; the page confirms "Your eligible offline results have synced."

If you weren't signed in when you started a sample, the page says "Sign in while online before starting a sample if you want its result to sync to your account." Those answers stay on the device only; sign in while you're online, reopen the page, and the samples you practise from then on can sync.

If you see "The download or sync did not finish", wait for a steadier signal and choose Sync again; your downloads are unchanged. If one sample keeps failing, the lesson was probably updated since you downloaded it: remove that download and download it again.

Remove downloads

Choose Remove download under a sample to delete its audio and script from this device. Downloads belong to this browser on this device: clearing its site data removes them, and another phone needs its own.

If the page can't store samples

"This browser cannot store offline samples." appears in some private windows and older browsers. Use a normal window in a current Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge; online practice works either way.

If a downloaded sample stays silent, see Audio won't play or cuts out. If a sample is missing from the list or its script looks wrong, write to us from the contact page with "A lesson or its audio seems wrong" selected and tell us the lesson name.
