The start of the Tour of Oman

The Tour of Oman started in 2010. Muscat Municipality and Amaury Sport Organisation created the race together through an agreement. It is an official bicycle competition with ProSeries classification, placing it right below the top WorldTour races.

Every year in February, the race takes place in the northern governorates of Oman. Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara won the inaugural race in 2010. Top international squads travel to Oman to build fitness and test riders during this early season. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth oversees national support and municipal coordination for the event.

Riding near the sea and through valleys

The race covers more than eight hundred kilometers of open road. Cyclists travel on coastal highways, long desert roads, and through rocky valleys. Coastal routes showcase the waters of the Gulf of Oman along the scenic Matrah Corniche.

Riders must be careful when strong crosswinds blow across desert plains. These crosswinds force the group to form staggered echelon formations. Stage routes also include winding descents and narrow arid river valleys locally called wadis. Intermediate sprint points in regional towns motivate riders to launch early breakaway attacks, while sunny temperatures contrast with colder European weather.

The great climb up Jabal Akhdar

The hardest part of the race is the summit finish at Jabal Akhdar, also called Green Mountain. This famous mountain stage is the queen stage of the competition. The final mountain climb extends nearly six kilometers with an average gradient exceeding ten percent.

Steep road sections on the upper mountain slopes reach maximum ramps of fourteen percent. Team leaders depend on climbing domestiques to set a high pace and drop rivals. Great champions like Chris Froome and Vincenzo Nibali have won stage victories on this mountain. Dramatic limestone cliffs in the Al Hajar mountain range provide striking views worldwide.

Special jerseys and fast team sprints

The best riders earn special jerseys during the race. The overall leader of the general classification wears the distinctive red jersey. The points classification leader wears the green jersey for accumulating top finishes in sprints and stage finishes.

The white jersey honors the highest-ranked young competitor under twenty-five years of age. A golden jersey is awarded to the most active rider who initiates aggressive breakaway moves. At the finish line, sprinters reach speeds over sixty kilometers per hour in bunch sprint finishes. Support riders carry water bottles and provide aerodynamic slipstreams for their team sprinters.

The Muscat Classic one-day race

In 2023, organizers launched the Muscat Classic as a single-day road race. It takes place just before the multi-day stage tour. The Muscat Classic carries a UCI 1.1 category ranking that tests punchy riders on short steep climbs.

The course crosses challenging hills around Al Hamriyah, Wadi Al Kabir, and the Al Jissah pass. Teams earn valuable early-season ranking points by competing in both events. Combining both competitions creates a six-day festival of elite professional cycling. Police and municipal authorities organize rolling road closures to ensure complete safety on the roads.

Sports, community, and national development

Television broadcasts transmit live race action and summaries to more than one hundred countries. This coverage promotes Oman as a scenic winter destination for sports travel and adventure tourism.

The Oman Cycling Association hosts community rides and junior training sessions during the event. Young Omani athletes gain direct inspiration from observing world-class professional cyclists in person. New public paths and cycling infrastructure in Muscat encourage healthier lifestyles for local residents. The event supports national economic and sports objectives under broader long-term development programs.
