How scoring works

Your score is the share of the words in the script that you typed correctly. Type all ten words of a ten-word line and you'll see Got it. Every word matched. Miss two and you'll see You caught 8 of 10 words, which is 80%. Capital letters and punctuation don't count. Spelling does.

What counts as a match

1. The check lines your words up against the script's words, in order. A misspelt word, a missing word and an extra word each cost one word, so typing more than you heard doesn't help.
2. Capital letters, commas, full stops and question marks are ignored. don't worry and Don't worry! score the same.
3. Spelling counts. their for there is a miss, so if you're unsure, replay the clip once more before you check.
4. Write contractions the way the speaker says them: if you hear don't, type don't. Some clips also accept the other form, but don't rely on it.

When a clip counts as done

Match 90% or more and the clip is done; miss one word of ten and you'll see Close: 9 of 10 words with the marked word to listen for once more. Below 90%, the clip stays open: listen for the marked words, fix them and choose Check my answer again. Your newest answer is the one that counts, and there's no limit on practice checks.

What hints and reveals do to the number

Nothing, in the case of hints. Get a hint tells you how many words to listen for, then the opening words, then an outline, and none of that changes your score. Reveal transcript is different: that clip is recorded as 0% and marked Revealed. You can still finish the lesson with it, and if you type the line once more with the transcript open and check, your new answer replaces the zero. More in Hints and reveals.

Your lesson score

When every clip in Practice is done, the result card says Your result: 84% across every item. That number is the average of your latest answer on each clip. The Test tab works the same way with three differences: there are no hints, there's no reveal, and you get two answers per clip, so the second one is final even if it's below 90%.

Where you'll see your scores

• On the lesson, each finished clip shows Done · 84%, and the result card shows the lesson average.
• Practice history (Account → Practice) lists every lesson you've completed with its percentage.
• Mistake notebook keeps your latest answer for any clip you scored below 100%, with % of the words matched, so you can try it again. See The Mistakes page.
• Weekly report shows Average completed score for the last seven days beside the seven before. Scores describe the exercises you completed, so a lesson you left half-way doesn't count.

The number is for you

No other learner sees your scores. They aren't ranked, shared or posted anywhere; they're there so you can see which clips to listen to again.
