Choosing an accent (British, American, Australian)

Open a lesson's Practice tab and, above the first clip, choose the voice you practise with: Mixed accents, British, American or Australian. The recording swaps straight away, your attempt carries on, and this browser remembers the choice. If you're signed in, it's saved to your account as well, and you can set the default under Practice plan and accent in Settings.

Change the voice on a lesson

1. Open the lesson and choose Practice.
2. Under Listen and write, find Choose the voice you practise with.
3. Pick a voice. The clip you're on reloads in that voice, and every clip after it uses it too.

Mixed accents rotates through the voices clip by clip, so one lesson gives you all three, and a small label on each clip tells you which one is playing. Switching voice in the middle of a lesson doesn't reset anything: your finished clips stay finished, and each answer is checked against the same script whichever voice read it.

Set your default in Settings

1. Choose Account in the header, then Settings.
2. In Practice plan and accent, set Listening accent to Mixed, British, American or Australian.
3. Choose Save changes.

Every lesson now opens in that voice. Picking a different voice on a lesson updates the default too, so you don't need to come back here unless you want to. As a guest, your choice is remembered in this browser only; sign in and it follows you to your other devices.

Which clips have which voices

Every lesson in the library currently has British, American and Australian recordings for its listening clips, whether they're the 4-second lines, the 10-second sentences or the 20-second passages. The picker only lists the voices a lesson actually has, and it doesn't appear at all when there's just one. If a clip ever lacks the voice you chose, it plays the recording it does have and the label on that clip reads American only, so you're never left with silence. We're not promising other accents.

Pick the one you'll hear most

If you're preparing for a workplace, an exam or a move, choose the accent you'll meet there and stay with it for a few weeks. If you just want a flexible ear, Mixed accents is the setting to leave on. To hear the same line in all three voices side by side, open Practice in the header and choose Try listening sample under any lesson.

If the voice you chose won't play, or the clip stops partway through, see Audio won't play or cuts out. The fix is usually the volume or a quick reload, and your accent choice survives it.
