Choosing an accent (British, American, Australian)

Choose from a lesson's available accents or set a default in Settings. Each clip shows which accent is playing.
Open a lesson's Practice tab and, above the first clip, choose from the available accents. You may see Mixed accents, British, American or Australian. The recording changes, your attempt carries on, and this browser remembers the choice. If you're signed in, it's saved to your account as well, and you can set the default under Practice plan and accent in Settings.
Change the voice on a lesson
- Open the lesson and choose Practice.
- Under Listen and write, find Choose the voice you practise with.
- Pick a voice. The clip you're on reloads in that voice, and every clip after it uses it too.
Mixed accents uses the available voices across the clips. A label on each clip tells you which accent is playing. Switching voice in the middle of a lesson keeps your finished clips, and each answer is checked against the same script whichever voice read it.
Set your default in Settings
- Choose Account in the header, then Settings.
- In Practice plan and accent, set Listening accent to Mixed, British, American or Australian.
- Choose Save changes.
Lessons use your preferred voice when that recording is available. Picking a different voice in a lesson updates the default too. As a guest, your choice is remembered in this browser only; sign in and it follows you to your other devices. Check the clip label when your preferred accent is unavailable.
Which clips have which voices
The picker lists the accents available in that lesson. When there is only one, there is no accent choice to make. A clip that lacks your chosen accent uses an available recording instead; check its label to see the accent you are hearing.
Pick the one you'll hear most
If you're preparing for a workplace, an exam or a move, choose the accent you'll hear there when it is available. Use Mixed accents to practice with different voices. To compare the available recordings of a sample, open Lessons in the header and choose Try listening sample on a lesson card.
