1. 0:00
Bella (tutor) Welcome to MicroEnglish. Two friends are planning a holiday:
2. 0:04
Bella (tutor) one wants mountain walks, the other wants a beach. Sound familiar?
3. 0:08
Bella (tutor) In this B2 lesson, we'll use see eye to eye
4. 0:12
Bella (tutor) to describe agreement, and practise talking about differences
5. 0:16
Bella (tutor) without making them personal.
6. 0:19
Bella (tutor) The friends have the same dates free, but different ideas about
7. 0:22
Bella (tutor) the destination. One says, we don't see eye
8. 0:26
Bella (tutor) to eye on where to go. That means they don't agree about that
9. 0:29
Bella (tutor) decision. It doesn't tell us whether they'll argue or find
10. 0:33
    Bella (tutor) a solution.
11. 0:34
Bella (tutor) Look at the two parts separately. They see eye to eye on the
12. 0:38
Bella (tutor) timing: June suits both of them. They don't see
13. 0:42
Bella (tutor) eye to eye on the destination. This expression has one
14. 0:45
Bella (tutor) central meaning, agreement. Naming the subject helps
15. 0:49
Bella (tutor) us show exactly where that agreement begins and ends.
16. 0:53
Bella (tutor) Learn see eye to eye as a complete phrase.
17. 0:56
Bella (tutor) It means people's views agree, rather than describing where
18. 1:00
Bella (tutor) they are literally looking. Keep both nouns singular
19. 1:04
Bella (tutor) in see eye to eye. Practise see eye to eye
20. 1:07
Bella (tutor) in this sentence: We see eye to eye. Then name the subject:
21. 1:11
Bella (tutor) We see eye to eye on our holiday plans.
22. 1:15
Bella (tutor) Build your sentence in three steps: name the people,
23. 1:18
Bella (tutor) describe their agreement, and name the subject if needed. My
24. 1:23
Bella (tutor) sister and I don't see eye to eye on our holiday plans. If
25. 1:26
Bella (tutor) the subject is already clear, we don't see eye to eye
26. 1:30
    Bella (tutor) is enough.
27. 1:32
Bella (tutor) Use with to introduce the other person: I see
28. 1:35
Bella (tutor) eye to eye with Jo. On or about can introduce
29. 1:39
Bella (tutor) the subject. Change the verb normally for time. Yesterday,
30. 1:43
Bella (tutor) we didn't see eye to eye. After didn't, use see,
31. 1:47
    Bella (tutor) not saw.
32. 1:49
Bella (tutor) You'll often hear the negative form, but positive sentences
33. 1:52
Bella (tutor) work too. Two designers both prefer green:
34. 1:56
Bella (tutor) we see eye to eye on the colour. They share that opinion. We
35. 2:00
Bella (tutor) still don't know whether they agree on the price or the shape.
36. 2:04
Bella (tutor) Compare agreement with getting along. You can enjoy someone's
37. 2:07
Bella (tutor) company while disagreeing with their opinions. These neighbours
38. 2:11
Bella (tutor) get along, but don't see eye to eye on gardening. One likes
39. 2:15
Bella (tutor) neat borders; the other prefers wildflowers. Neither
40. 2:19
Bella (tutor) phrase tells us the whole relationship.
41. 2:22
Bella (tutor) This conversational expression suits friends and many workplace
42. 2:26
Bella (tutor) discussions. In formal writing, agree may be simpler.
43. 2:30
Bella (tutor) Don't quite can soften disagreement, especially with
44. 2:33
Bella (tutor) a calm tone. Follow it with your reason or a question.
45. 2:38
Bella (tutor) Soft wording alone won't make a dismissive response respectful.
46. 2:42
Bella (tutor) Now listen to four conversations, two British and two American.
47. 2:46
Bella (tutor) Decide what the speakers agree or disagree about. Notice
48. 2:50
Bella (tutor) words such as only, still, and now: they can
49. 2:54
Bella (tutor) limit or change the meaning. Choose your answer before checking
50. 2:57
    Bella (tutor) the explanation.
51. 2:59
Bella (tutor) George and Alice are looking for a flat. Which part of
52. 3:03
Bella (tutor) the decision have they settled?
53. 3:05
George We see eye to eye on the budget, but still not on the area.
54. 3:09
George I'd pay the same rent to live nearer the station.
55. 3:12
Alice And I'd rather have a park nearby.
56. 3:19
Bella (tutor) They agree on the budget. George names it directly, but says
57. 3:23
Bella (tutor) they still disagree about the area. Alice's preference explains
58. 3:27
    Bella (tutor) that difference.
59. 3:28
George We see eye to eye on the budget, but still not on the area.
60. 3:32
George I'd pay the same rent to live nearer the station.
61. 3:35
Alice And I'd rather have a park nearby.
62. 3:38
Bella (tutor) Roger and Jessica run a café. Listen for how their
63. 3:41
    Bella (tutor) views have developed.
64. 3:43
Roger Do we now see eye to eye on opening earlier,
65. 3:47
    Roger at seven?
66. 3:48
Roger Yes. I was against it, but so many customers
67. 3:52
    Jessica have asked.
68. 3:52
Jessica Great, let's try it next month.
69. 4:01
Bella (tutor) They now agree about opening earlier. Jessica says
70. 4:05
Bella (tutor) she was against it, but customer requests changed her mind.
71. 4:08
Bella (tutor) Roger's now and Jessica's yes confirm the new
72. 4:12
    Bella (tutor) agreement.
73. 4:13
Roger Do we now see eye to eye on opening earlier,
74. 4:17
    Roger at seven?
75. 4:18
Roger Yes. I was against it, but so many customers
76. 4:22
    Jessica have asked.
77. 4:22
Jessica Great, let's try it next month.
78. 4:26
Bella (tutor) Alice has been discussing a novel with Dan. What
79. 4:30
Bella (tutor) does she reveal about their relationship?
80. 4:32
George You and Dan had a lot to say about that novel.
81. 4:35
George We rarely see eye to eye on books, but talking
82. 4:39
    Alice to him is fun.
83. 4:40
Alice So the debate went well?
84. 4:42
George Yes, we laughed all evening.
85. 4:51
Bella (tutor) They enjoy talking despite their different opinions. Alice
86. 4:55
Bella (tutor) calls the discussion fun and says they laughed. Not seeing
87. 4:58
Bella (tutor) eye to eye doesn't imply hostility.
88. 5:01
George You and Dan had a lot to say about that novel.
89. 5:04
George We rarely see eye to eye on books, but talking
90. 5:08
    Alice to him is fun.
91. 5:09
Alice So the debate went well?
92. 5:11
George Yes, we laughed all evening.
93. 5:15
Bella (tutor) Jessica and Roger are preparing a presentation. Identify
94. 5:19
Bella (tutor) the remaining point of disagreement.
95. 5:22
Jessica We see eye to eye on the main message. It's only the slide
96. 5:25
    Jessica count.
97. 5:26
Jessica You think twenty is too many?
98. 5:28
Roger Yes. Could we get it down to ten?
99. 5:37
Bella (tutor) The slide count still needs discussion. They share the main
100. 5:40
Bella (tutor) message, and Jessica says it's only the number of slides that
101. 5:44
     Bella (tutor) concerns her.
102. 5:45
Jessica We see eye to eye on the main message. It's only the slide
103. 5:49
     Jessica count.
104. 5:49
Jessica You think twenty is too many?
105. 5:52
Roger Yes. Could we get it down to ten?
106. 5:55
Bella (tutor) Say this aloud: we don't quite see eye to eye on
107. 5:59
Bella (tutor) this. Now replace this with a subject, such as the schedule.
108. 6:03
Bella (tutor) Add a respectful next step: could we discuss another
109. 6:07
     Bella (tutor) option?
110. 6:14
Bella (tutor) Keep both nouns singular, even when several people are
111. 6:17
Bella (tutor) involved. The verb is see, so avoid
112. 6:21
Bella (tutor) we are eye to eye when you mean agreement. Both on
113. 6:25
Bella (tutor) and about work before the topic.
114. 6:27
Bella (tutor) You can leave out a topic that's already understood. Disagreement
115. 6:31
Bella (tutor) doesn't necessarily mean dislike. Also, we don't
116. 6:35
Bella (tutor) always see eye to eye leaves room for agreement sometimes.
117. 6:39
Bella (tutor) We never see eye to eye makes a much stronger claim.

Bella (tutor) it kind and specific. Ask any questions you have, too.
