  • Use this pattern for immediate activity, short-term situations, and prearranged plans.

8 étapes courtes, avec une question à chaque étape

Decide If an Action Is Happening at This Moment

When you want to report an event in progress, select the present continuous. This structure tells your listener that an activity started earlier, is active at this exact second, and has not yet finished. If you say that a baker bakes bread, you describe an occupation. If you say that the baker is baking bread, you describe what is happening in the kitchen right now.

  • The technician is checking the network router right now.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : The action is underway at the moment of speaking, so the continuous form is required.

  • Two couriers are carrying boxes across the warehouse floor.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : The sentence describes immediate physical activity seen directly in the room.

À vous

Which sentence describes an action happening at this exact moment?

Voir la réponse

Réponse : The mechanic is inspecting our car engine right now.

The present continuous verb is inspecting combined with right now indicates an ongoing physical action in the present.

Match Am, Is, or Are to the Subject

Every present continuous sentence requires two verb components: a form of be and a verb ending in -ing. Choose am exclusively when the subject is I. Select is for he, she, it, or singular noun phrases. Use are with you, we, they, or plural nouns. Leaving out the helping verb produces an ungrammatical sentence in standard written English.

  • I am writing the weekly report for our division.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : The subject I requires the helping verb am before the action word writing.

  • The team members are reviewing the new safety policies.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : The plural subject team members requires are as the helping verb.

À vous

Choose the sentence that demonstrates correct helping verb agreement.

Voir la réponse

Réponse : The laboratory supervisor is analyzing the chemical sample.

The subject laboratory supervisor is singular, so it requires the third-person singular helping verb is.

Apply Spelling Rules for the -ing Suffix

Most English verbs simply add -ing to the base form without alterations. However, when a verb ends in a silent e, you must drop that vowel before adding the suffix, turning write into writing and make into making. For short one-syllable verbs with one vowel followed by one consonant, double the final consonant to maintain vowel quality, producing words like running and sitting.

  • The chef is preparing fresh pasta dough for dinner.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : Prepare loses its silent e before adding -ing to become preparing.

  • Our runner is stopping near the water station.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : Stop doubles its final consonant p because it is a single-syllable word ending in a single vowel and consonant.

À vous

Which sentence spells the present continuous verb correctly?

Voir la réponse

Réponse : The driver is writing an address on the delivery label.

The base verb write drops its silent e before adding -ing, giving the spelling writing.

Form Negative Statements Using Not After Be

To construct a negative statement in the present continuous, place the negative particle not directly after your helping verb. Do not insert do not or does not into this construction. The helping verb carries the negation while the main verb keeps its -ing ending unchanged. You can say is not or are not in standard formal prose, or use spoken contractions like isn't or aren't.

  • The office manager is not taking telephone calls during the audit.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : Not is placed immediately after is to show that phone calls are currently avoided.

  • We are not printing paper copies because our printer needs toner.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : Are not precedes printing to indicate the negative condition in progress.

À vous

Select the correctly structured negative present continuous sentence.

Voir la réponse

Réponse : They are not working on the project this afternoon.

In negative continuous clauses, not must directly follow the auxiliary verb are, not precede it or replace it with do not.

Invert Word Order for Questions and Responses

When asking yes-no questions in the present continuous, move the helping verb am, is, or are to the beginning of the clause before the subject. For wh- questions, place the question word first, followed by the helping verb, the subject, and the -ing verb. When giving short answers, use the pronoun with the helping verb alone, avoiding repetitions of the -ing verb.

  • Are you attending the safety briefing at three?

Pourquoi cette forme convient : The auxiliary are moves in front of you to create an inquiry about today's schedule.

  • Yes, I am.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : A natural short response repeats only the subject pronoun and the auxiliary verb.

À vous

Which question is formed correctly in the present continuous?

Voir la réponse

Réponse : Is the inspector checking the building permits today?

Forming a standard question requires inverting the subject inspector and the helping verb is at the start of the clause.

Distinguish Temporary Situations from Habits

You do not need to be physically doing an action at the exact moment you speak to use the present continuous. If an activity is temporary and limited to a particular week, month, or season, the continuous aspect signals that this is not your permanent habit. Contrast this with the simple present, which indicates an established, unending routine or regular fact.

  • I am taking the subway this week while my bicycle is in the repair shop.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : This week shows a temporary circumstance that departs from normal habits.

  • Sandra lives in Boston, but she is staying in Chicago for two months.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : Lives represents permanent residence, whereas is staying marks a limited temporary stay.

À vous

Which statement expresses a temporary situation rather than a permanent routine?

Voir la réponse

Réponse : David is carpooling with neighbors while his car undergoes maintenance.

The phrase while his car undergoes maintenance and the continuous form is carpooling show a temporary arrangement.

Describe Trends and Ongoing Changes

Speakers frequently choose the present continuous to describe processes of change and gradual developments happening around the present era. In these contexts, dynamic verbs like get, grow, increase, become, or change show that a condition is evolving rather than static. Time indicators like this year, nowadays, or these days frequently accompany sentences describing current cultural or economic movements.

  • Online grocery orders are increasing rapidly in our district.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : The continuous verb are increasing highlights an ongoing developmental trend.

  • The autumn evenings are getting colder each week.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : Are getting describes a gradual transformation in temperature.

À vous

Which sentence indicates a gradual trend or developing change?

Voir la réponse

Réponse : Electric vehicles are becoming more affordable this year.

The verb phrase are becoming paired with this year indicates a progressive shift or developmental trend over time.

Discuss Definite Future Arrangements with Stated Times

When you have already agreed on a plan, booked tickets, or placed an appointment on your calendar, use the present continuous to talk about the future. This construction requires a future time marker to avoid confusion with an action happening right now. It emphasizes that prior coordination between people has taken place, distinguishing it from spontaneous decisions or simple predictions.

  • Dr. Evans is seeing four patients tomorrow morning.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : Tomorrow morning provides the future time marker, indicating a prearranged schedule.

  • We are flying to Montreal next Friday for the annual conference.

Pourquoi cette forme convient : The travel arrangement has been booked and scheduled with a precise destination and date.

À vous

Which sentence uses the present continuous to express an arranged future event?

Voir la réponse

Réponse : Our regional sales director is visiting our branch office next Tuesday.

The inclusion of next Tuesday clarifies that is visiting represents a fixed future arrangement rather than an immediate action.

Vos questions sur « Present Continuous: Describe Actions in Progress »

Can I use verbs like know, want, or like in the present continuous?

Most verbs that describe mental states, emotions, or possession do not typically take the continuous aspect because they represent continuing states rather than active physical processes. Instead of saying that someone is knowing or wanting something, use the simple present form. When a state verb shifts meaning to describe an active process, such as tasting soup or seeing a doctor, the continuous form becomes possible.

I know the address of the clinic.

She is seeing her doctor tomorrow morning for an annual checkup.

How do I decide between the simple present and the present continuous?

Choose the simple present for regular routines, recurring habits, or permanent facts that remain true day after day. Choose the present continuous when an action is happening at this very moment, when a situation is temporary, or when a change is currently in progress.

David drinks coffee every morning before work.

David is drinking green tea this week while his throat recovers.

Why do native speakers use the present continuous to talk about the future?

English speakers use the present continuous for future events when a definite personal arrangement already exists. This indicates that plans, bookings, or agreements have been settled with other people. Without a specific future time expression or clear context, listeners will assume the action is happening right now.

We are meeting the marketing director at three on Thursday afternoon.

Are you flying to Denver next Monday?

When do I need to double the final letter before adding -ing?

Double the final consonant only when a one-syllable word ends in a single consonant preceded by a single vowel, such as run becoming running. If the syllable ends in two consonants or contains two vowels together, do not double the consonant. For longer words, double the final consonant only if stress falls on the final syllable.

The athlete is running around the track.

The manager is admitting two new interns into the conference hall.
