Bella (tutor) Welcome to MicroEnglish! Have you noticed that speaking often
2. 0:04
Bella (tutor) feels easier after regular practice? In this B2
3. 0:07
Bella (tutor) lesson, we'll connect ideas like practice and confidence using
4. 0:11
Bella (tutor) go hand in hand. You'll learn what that connection means,
5. 0:15
Bella (tutor) what it doesn't prove, and how to express your own examples.
6. 0:19
Bella (tutor) Imagine giving a short presentation every Friday. Over
7. 0:23
Bella (tutor) time, you feel more confident. You might say, practice
8. 0:27
Bella (tutor) and confidence often go hand in hand. The expression
9. 0:30
Bella (tutor) presents them as closely connected. Here, nobody is
10. 0:34
Bella (tutor) literally holding hands; we're describing a relationship between
11. 0:38
    Bella (tutor) ideas.
12. 0:39
Bella (tutor) These pairs illustrate one meaning: two things
13. 0:43
Bella (tutor) are closely connected and often occur together, or one
14. 0:46
Bella (tutor) accompanies the other. The connection can involve skills,
15. 0:50
Bella (tutor) relationships or duties. Both things don't have to be
16. 0:54
Bella (tutor) pleasant. Greater freedom can go hand in hand with greater
17. 0:57
    Bella (tutor) responsibility.
18. 0:59
Bella (tutor) Suppose busy swimming pools and strong ice cream sales
19. 1:03
Bella (tutor) go hand in hand in summer. Does swimming cause those sales?
20. 1:07
Bella (tutor) This sentence doesn't establish that. Hot weather could
21. 1:10
    Bella (tutor) help explain both. The idiom describes a connection;
22. 1:14
Bella (tutor) evidence is needed to say what causes what.
23. 1:17
Bella (tutor) There are two useful patterns. Trust and honesty
24. 1:21
Bella (tutor) go hand in hand joins two subjects with and. Trust
25. 1:26
Bella (tutor) goes hand in hand with honesty makes trust the subject and
26. 1:29
Bella (tutor) introduces the second idea with with. For the past,
27. 1:33
Bella (tutor) use went: expansion went hand in hand with higher
28. 1:37
    Bella (tutor) costs.
29. 1:38
Bella (tutor) At a bicycle repair workshop, the instructor explains a
30. 1:42
Bella (tutor) repair, then learners try it immediately. Learning
31. 1:46
Bella (tutor) goes hand in hand with doing. This describes the way the workshop
32. 1:50
Bella (tutor) works: explanation and practical experience accompany
33. 1:53
Bella (tutor) each other. It doesn't mean they are exactly the same activity.
34. 1:58
Bella (tutor) Say hand in hand as a connected group, with
35. 2:01
Bella (tutor) the two hands clearly stressed. In is usually lighter.
36. 2:05
Bella (tutor) Then attach with and your second idea. Keep
37. 2:09
Bella (tutor) the rhythm comfortable; you don't need to give every small
38. 2:12
Bella (tutor) word equal weight to make yourself understood.
39. 2:15
Bella (tutor) This expression fits everyday conversation, workplace discussion
40. 2:20
Bella (tutor) and many kinds of writing. In a report, explain
41. 2:23
Bella (tutor) the connection rather than relying on the idiom alone. Words
42. 2:27
Bella (tutor) like often and can help limit your claim when the relationship
43. 2:30
Bella (tutor) isn't universal. Choose them to match your evidence.
44. 2:35
Bella (tutor) A common mistake is changing hand to hands. Keep
45. 2:38
Bella (tutor) both instances singular: hand in hand. Also
46. 2:42
Bella (tutor) remember with when you add the second idea after the expression.
47. 2:46
Bella (tutor) Success often goes hand in hand with effort is natural,
48. 2:50
Bella (tutor) without promising that effort always guarantees success.
49. 2:54
Bella (tutor) Now listen to four short conversations: two British
50. 2:57
Bella (tutor) and two American. Identify the connected ideas,
51. 3:01
Bella (tutor) then choose the conclusion supported by the speakers. Try without
52. 3:05
Bella (tutor) captions first. After the explanation, you'll hear the same
53. 3:09
    Bella (tutor) conversation again.
54. 3:11
Bella (tutor) George has just been promoted. Listen to what Alice
55. 3:14
Bella (tutor) says about his new role. What should he expect?
56. 3:18
George I can choose my team's projects now.
57. 3:20
George Freedom and responsibility go hand in hand. You'll
58. 3:23
    Alice explain the results too.
59. 3:25
Alice Right. I had better choose carefully.
60. 3:34
Bella (tutor) He should expect freedom and responsibility together. Choosing
61. 3:38
Bella (tutor) his team's projects gives him freedom; explaining the results
62. 3:41
    Bella (tutor) makes him accountable.
63. 3:43
George I can choose my team's projects now.
64. 3:45
George Freedom and responsibility go hand in hand. You'll
65. 3:48
    Alice explain the results too.
66. 3:50
Alice Right. I had better choose carefully.
67. 3:54
Bella (tutor) Roger and Jessica are planning dinner. Listen for the reason
68. 3:57
    Bella (tutor) behind Jessica's suggestion.
69. 4:00
Roger Everyone's talking about that new restaurant.
70. 4:02
Roger Popularity often goes hand in hand with longer waits.
71. 4:06
    Jessica Let's book.
72. 4:07
Jessica Good idea. I'll call them.
73. 4:15
Bella (tutor) She connects popularity with longer waits. Booking
74. 4:19
Bella (tutor) is her practical response to that connection, not a way to
75. 4:22
    Bella (tutor) improve the food.
76. 4:24
Roger Everyone's talking about that new restaurant.
77. 4:26
Roger Popularity often goes hand in hand with longer waits.
78. 4:30
    Jessica Let's book.
79. 4:31
Jessica Good idea. I'll call them.
80. 4:34
Bella (tutor) Alice has read a survey about evening habits. What does
81. 4:38
Bella (tutor) George conclude after her response?
82. 4:40
George So reading makes people sleep better?
83. 4:44
George Reading and good sleep go hand in hand in this survey.
84. 4:48
Alice It doesn't tell us why.
85. 4:49
Alice So we can't say one causes the other.
86. 4:57
Bella (tutor) George accepts a link without a proven cause. Alice
87. 5:01
Bella (tutor) explicitly says the survey cannot explain why the two things
88. 5:04
    Bella (tutor) go together.
89. 5:06
George So reading makes people sleep better?
90. 5:09
George Reading and good sleep go hand in hand in this survey.
91. 5:13
Alice It doesn't tell us why.
92. 5:15
Alice So we can't say one causes the other.
93. 5:18
Bella (tutor) Jessica is frustrated in a pottery class. Listen for how Roger
94. 5:22
    Bella (tutor) interprets her experience.
95. 5:24
    Jessica My pot collapsed again.
96. 5:27
Jessica Mistakes go hand in hand with learning. My
97. 5:31
Roger first bowl fell apart too.
98. 5:32
Roger All right. I'll give it another try.
99. 5:41
Bella (tutor) Roger sees mistakes as part of learning. His own failed
100. 5:45
Bella (tutor) bowl supports that reassurance, and Jessica decides to try
101. 5:48
     Bella (tutor) again.
102. 5:49
     Jessica My pot collapsed again.
103. 5:52
Jessica Mistakes go hand in hand with learning. My
104. 5:56
Roger first bowl fell apart too.
105. 5:57
Roger All right. I'll give it another try.
106. 6:01
Bella (tutor) Your turn. Say, confidence goes hand in
107. 6:05
Bella (tutor) hand with practice. Then replace confidence and practice with
108. 6:08
Bella (tutor) two ideas from your work or interests. Think about the connection
109. 6:12
     Bella (tutor) before you speak.
110. 6:20
Bella (tutor) Remember, the expression doesn't prove a cause, and it
111. 6:23
Bella (tutor) doesn't require two positive ideas. You can discuss costs,
112. 6:28
Bella (tutor) problems or risks. It also works beyond casual
113. 6:31
Bella (tutor) speech, although a precise explanation of the relationship
114. 6:35
Bella (tutor) may be better in technical writing.
115. 6:37
Bella (tutor) Choose go or goes according to the subject, and
116. 6:41
Bella (tutor) went for a past connection. One final distinction:
117. 6:45
Bella (tutor) two unrelated events can happen at the same time. Saying
118. 6:49
Bella (tutor) they go hand in hand suggests a closer relationship.
119. 6:53
Bella (tutor) Shared timing alone may not justify that description.
