Bella (tutor) Welcome to MicroEnglish. In this B2 lesson, meet Sam,
2. 0:04
Bella (tutor) a new colleague who listens more than he speaks at lunch. Over
3. 0:07
Bella (tutor) the next few weeks, that changes. We'll follow three moments
4. 0:11
Bella (tutor) and learn how to describe growing social confidence, while
5. 0:15
Bella (tutor) remembering that being quiet is perfectly fine.
6. 0:18
Bella (tutor) On Monday, Sam answers questions politely but
7. 0:22
Bella (tutor) rarely starts a conversation. We can't tell whether he's shy,
8. 0:26
Bella (tutor) tired or simply listening. Later, when he feels
9. 0:30
Bella (tutor) more comfortable with the team, he begins sharing stories.
10. 0:33
Bella (tutor) His colleague says, Sam is coming out of his shell.
11. 0:37
Bella (tutor) These are three stages of one change, not three
12. 0:41
Bella (tutor) different meanings. To come out of your shell means to become
13. 0:44
Bella (tutor) less shy or reserved and more confident with other people.
14. 0:48
Bella (tutor) The change can happen gradually, or during one enjoyable
15. 0:52
    Bella (tutor) conversation.
16. 0:53
Bella (tutor) Learn come out of your shell as a complete expression. The
17. 0:58
Bella (tutor) shell is a picture of someone keeping themselves protected.
18. 1:01
Bella (tutor) We aren't talking about a real shell. In speech, out
19. 1:05
Bella (tutor) of often connects smoothly. Let shell carry a clear
20. 1:08
Bella (tutor) beat when you practise.
21. 1:10
Bella (tutor) Trying pottery alone doesn't necessarily mean coming out of
22. 1:14
Bella (tutor) your shell. Starting conversations with other learners might.
23. 1:18
Bella (tutor) The expression focuses on social behaviour. It
24. 1:21
Bella (tutor) also doesn't mean becoming the loudest person in the room.
25. 1:24
Bella (tutor) Someone can remain quiet and still feel much more confident.
26. 1:29
Bella (tutor) Change come for the time: is coming,
27. 1:33
Bella (tutor) came, has come. Match the possessive to the person:
28. 1:37
Bella (tutor) my shell, his shell, her shell. With several
29. 1:41
Bella (tutor) people, their shells is usual. Notice the past participle:
30. 1:45
Bella (tutor) she's come out of her shell, not she's came.
31. 1:49
Bella (tutor) At the second lunch, someone mentions pottery. Sam
32. 1:53
Bella (tutor) asks a question, then tells a funny story about a bowl he made.
33. 1:57
Bella (tutor) A shared interest helps him feel at ease. Saying he
34. 2:01
Bella (tutor) started coming out of his shell suggests a beginning, rather
35. 2:04
Bella (tutor) than a complete personality change.
36. 2:07
Bella (tutor) A month later, Sam invites a new colleague to join lunch.
37. 2:11
Bella (tutor) He's really come out of his shell with this team. That final
38. 2:14
Bella (tutor) detail matters: confidence can depend on the group. This
39. 2:18
Bella (tutor) conversational expression suits friendly discussion, though
40. 2:22
Bella (tutor) formal feedback may need more specific descriptions.
41. 2:26
Bella (tutor) Be careful when giving advice. You need to come out of your
42. 2:29
Bella (tutor) shell can make someone feel judged. An invitation gives them
43. 2:32
Bella (tutor) a choice. When using this expression, retain the
44. 2:36
Bella (tutor) full phrase out of your shell. Practise it together:
45. 2:40
Bella (tutor) come out of your shell.
46. 2:42
Bella (tutor) Next, hear two British and two American conversations.
47. 2:46
Bella (tutor) Listen for evidence of changing confidence. Choose an answer
48. 2:50
Bella (tutor) before checking the explanation. On the replay, connect
49. 2:54
Bella (tutor) the expression to the words around it.
50. 2:57
Bella (tutor) At choir practice, two members discuss Ben. What
51. 3:01
Bella (tutor) change have they noticed?
52. 3:03
George Ben used to leave as soon as practice finished.
53. 3:05
George He's coming out of his shell. Now he chats to everyone during
54. 3:09
    Alice the break.
55. 3:10
Alice Yes, he even asked me about my holiday.
56. 3:19
Bella (tutor) Ben now starts conversations. Joining in shows
57. 3:22
Bella (tutor) growing social confidence; the speakers say nothing about his
58. 3:26
    Bella (tutor) singing ability.
59. 3:27
George Ben used to leave as soon as practice finished.
60. 3:30
George He's coming out of his shell. Now he chats to everyone during
61. 3:33
    Alice the break.
62. 3:34
Alice Yes, he even asked me about my holiday.
63. 3:38
Bella (tutor) After a game evening, Roger asks Jessica about
64. 3:42
Bella (tutor) her experience. What helped her?
65. 3:45
Roger Did you enjoy meeting my friends?
66. 3:48
Roger I was nervous, but I came out of my shell when I explained
67. 3:51
    Jessica the game.
68. 3:52
Jessica You knew those rules better than any of us.
69. 4:01
Bella (tutor) Explaining the rules helped. Jessica knew the game and had
70. 4:04
Bella (tutor) something to contribute. Winning isn't mentioned.
71. 4:08
Roger Did you enjoy meeting my friends?
72. 4:11
Roger I was nervous, but I came out of my shell when I explained
73. 4:15
    Jessica the game.
74. 4:15
Jessica You knew those rules better than any of us.
75. 4:19
Bella (tutor) Two colleagues compare Maya's behaviour in different groups.
76. 4:23
Bella (tutor) What does their conversation suggest?
77. 4:26
Alice Maya's really come out of her shell at our team
78. 4:30
    Alice lunches.
79. 4:30
Alice Is she happier at big networking events too?
80. 4:34
George No, she still finds those uncomfortable.
81. 4:43
Bella (tutor) Maya is more confident with her team. Her unease at large
82. 4:47
Bella (tutor) events shows that this change doesn't apply everywhere.
83. 4:51
Alice Maya's really come out of her shell at our team
84. 4:54
    Alice lunches.
85. 4:55
Alice Is she happier at big networking events too?
86. 4:59
George No, she still finds those uncomfortable.
87. 5:03
Bella (tutor) Jessica wants to help a new neighbour settle in. Listen
88. 5:07
    Bella (tutor) to Roger's suggestion.
89. 5:09
Jessica How can we help Leo come out of his shell?
90. 5:11
Jessica Let's invite him for coffee and let him decide.
91. 5:15
Roger Sure. No pressure to join us.
92. 5:22
Bella (tutor) Roger suggests an invitation with a choice. Coffee
93. 5:26
Bella (tutor) offers contact without requiring Leo to act more outgoing.
94. 5:31
Jessica How can we help Leo come out of his shell?
95. 5:33
Jessica Let's invite him for coffee and let him decide.
96. 5:36
Roger Sure. No pressure to join us.
97. 5:39
Bella (tutor) Complete this sentence aloud: I came out of my shell when...
98. 5:43
Bella (tutor) You might mention a welcoming group or a shared interest. You
99. 5:47
Bella (tutor) can invent a person if you'd prefer not to talk about yourself.
100. 5:57
Bella (tutor) Does this mean talking constantly? No. A brief,
101. 6:01
Bella (tutor) confident contribution may show the change. Is quietness
102. 6:05
Bella (tutor) a problem? No, and we shouldn't assume a quiet person
103. 6:08
Bella (tutor) is unhappy. Is the change permanent? Not necessarily.
104. 6:13
Bella (tutor) Someone may feel comfortable with friends but reserved around
105. 6:16
     Bella (tutor) strangers.
106. 6:17
Bella (tutor) You can certainly use it about yourself. Keep out of
107. 6:21
Bella (tutor) in the idiom, even though out from appears in other English
108. 6:25
Bella (tutor) phrases. For a formal report, describe what happened:
109. 6:29
Bella (tutor) she now contributes ideas in meetings. That gives the reader
110. 6:32
Bella (tutor) clearer evidence than a general comment about confidence.
