1. 0:00
Tutor Welcome to MicroEnglish. In this B2 lesson, you're
2. 0:03
Tutor joining a pottery class for the first time. You want to make
3. 0:07
Tutor a bowl, but you've never touched a pottery wheel. What could
4. 0:10
Tutor a friend say to encourage you? Today we'll practise: give
5. 0:14
   Tutor it your best shot.
6. 0:16
Tutor You watch the teacher, put on your apron and sit down.
7. 0:20
Tutor Your friend says, give it your best shot. They mean
8. 0:24
Tutor try to do it as well as you can. They aren't asking for a perfect
9. 0:27
Tutor bowl. They're encouraging you to make your best effort.
10. 0:31
Tutor Follow three stages: preparation, effort and
11. 0:35
Tutor outcome. Preparation can help you do your best. The
12. 0:38
Tutor expression itself focuses on the effort you make. Afterwards,
13. 0:42
Tutor the result might be excellent, disappointing or somewhere between.
14. 0:46
Tutor We can use the phrase before a challenge or when looking back.
15. 0:51
Tutor Learn give it your best shot as a whole expression.
16. 0:54
Tutor Here, it refers to the challenge you've already mentioned.
17. 0:57
Tutor You can also name the task: give the audition your best
18. 1:01
    Tutor shot. In this expression, shot means an attempt;
19. 1:06
Tutor there's no literal shooting involved.
20. 1:08
Tutor Match the possessive to the person making the effort. I
21. 1:12
Tutor give it my best shot; she gives it her best shot. For the
22. 1:16
Tutor past, use gave. Notice that best shot stays
23. 1:20
Tutor singular. The expression describes your strongest attempt,
24. 1:23
Tutor even if that attempt involves several practice sessions.
25. 1:27
Tutor Compare these statements. I'll give it my best shot commits
26. 1:31
Tutor to effort. I'm sure I'll succeed expresses confidence
27. 1:35
Tutor about the result. Someone can give a difficult exam their best
28. 1:38
Tutor shot and still fail. That doesn't make their earlier statement
29. 1:42
    Tutor false.
30. 1:43
Tutor Back at the wheel, the clay keeps leaning sideways.
31. 1:47
Tutor It looks tricky, but give it your best shot. This is friendly,
32. 1:51
Tutor informal encouragement. It suits everyday conversation and
33. 1:54
Tutor many relaxed workplace exchanges. In a formal report,
34. 1:59
Tutor make every effort may fit better.
35. 2:01
Tutor Your bowl collapses. You can still say, I gave
36. 2:05
Tutor it my best shot. You're describing the effort honestly, without
37. 2:08
Tutor claiming success. A useful contrast is give
38. 2:12
Tutor it a shot: that means try it. Adding your best puts
39. 2:16
Tutor more emphasis on the quality of your effort.
40. 2:19
Tutor A common mistake is replacing my with the: I'll give it
41. 2:23
Tutor the best shot. For this idiom, use the possessive: my
42. 2:27
Tutor best shot. You can also say I'll do my best.
43. 2:30
Tutor When speaking, let best carry emphasis so the listener
44. 2:34
    Tutor hears your commitment.
45. 2:36
Tutor Now listen to four conversations: two British and two
46. 2:40
Tutor American. Decide what you can infer about each speaker's effort
47. 2:44
Tutor or expectations. Choose an answer before checking the explanation.
48. 2:48
Tutor The same conversation then plays again with captions, so you
49. 2:51
Tutor can connect the sounds and words.
50. 2:55
Tutor Alice has an audition tomorrow. Listen for what she is promising.
51. 2:59
George Ready for the choir audition?
52. 3:00
George I've practised all week. I might not get in, but I'll
53. 3:04
Alice give it my best shot.
54. 3:05
Alice I'll be there to support you.
55. 3:13
Tutor She promises effort. She has practised, but explicitly
56. 3:17
Tutor says she may not get in. Her place is uncertain.
57. 3:21
George Ready for the choir audition?
58. 3:22
George I've practised all week. I might not get in, but I'll
59. 3:26
Alice give it my best shot.
60. 3:27
Alice I'll be there to support you.
61. 3:30
Tutor Jessica needs help with a missing file. What can she expect
62. 3:34
    Tutor from Roger?
63. 3:35
Jessica Can you recover the file I deleted?
64. 3:38
Jessica I can't promise, but I'll give it my best shot.
65. 3:41
    Roger Is there a backup?
66. 3:42
Roger Maybe on my old laptop. I'll check.
67. 3:51
Tutor Roger will try. Can't promise sets a limit
68. 3:54
Tutor on the outcome; give it my best shot shows willingness to
69. 3:58
    Tutor help.
70. 3:59
Jessica Can you recover the file I deleted?
71. 4:02
Jessica I can't promise, but I'll give it my best shot.
72. 4:05
    Roger Is there a backup?
73. 4:06
Roger Maybe on my old laptop. I'll check.
74. 4:10
Tutor A team has heard back about funding. How does George view their
75. 4:14
    Tutor work?
76. 4:15
Alice Did we get the funding for the garden?
77. 4:17
Alice No. We rewrote the proposal twice and
78. 4:21
George gave it our best shot.
79. 4:22
George That's disappointing. Let's ask for feedback.
80. 4:32
Tutor The team tried hard but didn't receive funding. Rewriting
81. 4:36
Tutor twice supports the claim that they made a serious effort.
82. 4:39
Alice Did we get the funding for the garden?
83. 4:42
Alice No. We rewrote the proposal twice and
84. 4:46
George gave it our best shot.
85. 4:47
George That's disappointing. Let's ask for feedback.
86. 4:51
Tutor Roger is considering a challenging recipe. Why
87. 4:55
Tutor does Jessica use the phrase?
88. 4:57
Roger Grandma's dumplings look hard to make.
89. 5:01
Roger Give it your best shot. I'll read the steps while you cook.
90. 5:04
Jessica All right. Let's start with the dough.
91. 5:13
Tutor She's encouraging him to try. Offering to read the steps
92. 5:16
Tutor gives practical support for his effort.
93. 5:19
Roger Grandma's dumplings look hard to make.
94. 5:22
Roger Give it your best shot. I'll read the steps while you cook.
95. 5:26
Jessica All right. Let's start with the dough.
96. 5:29
Tutor Say this aloud: It's new to me, but I'll give it my best shot.
97. 5:33
Tutor Now name a challenge of your own before that sentence. It
98. 5:37
Tutor could be leading a meeting or learning to swim. Make clear
99. 5:40
    Tutor what it refers to.
100. 5:48
Tutor Does it promise success? No. Does the task
101. 5:52
Tutor have to be new? No. An experienced musician can
102. 5:56
Tutor give a performance their best shot too. Is it formal? It's
103. 6:00
Tutor conversational. Think about your relationship with the listener
104. 6:03
Tutor and the situation when choosing it.
105. 6:06
Tutor You can name the task directly or use it when the task is clear.
106. 6:10
Tutor After failure, gave it my best shot still makes sense.
107. 6:14
Tutor And remember the shorter give it a shot simply invites an attempt.
108. 6:18
Tutor Best adds a stronger commitment to effort.
