Possessive Pronouns: Choose the Right Form
Can I use 'its' as a standalone possessive pronoun?
Possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns both signal ownership or close connection. Possessive adjectives introduce a noun phrase, telling your listener who holds or claims that noun. Possessive pronouns take the place of that entire possessive noun phrase, allowing you to refer to the owned item without saying its name twice.
ポイント
- Check whether a noun follows your possessive word.
- If the possessive introduces a noun phrase, choose my, your, his, her, its, our, or their.
- If the noun has already been established and stands earlier in the sentence, use mine, yours, his, hers, ours, or theirs.

Decide Whether a Noun Follows the Word
Before you select a possessive word, look at the position right after the blank. If the possessive introduces a noun, possibly with descriptive words in between, you need a possessive adjective such as my, your, or their. When no noun follows because the thing is already known, select a standalone possessive pronoun such as mine, yours, or theirs.
-
Your jacket is on the chair.
この表現を使う理由: The noun jacket comes directly after your.
-
The jacket on the chair is yours.
この表現を使う理由: Yours replaces your jacket and stands alone at the end.

Place Possessive Adjectives Directly Before Nouns
A possessive adjective introduces a noun phrase, and descriptive words can come between it and the noun. His can also stand alone as a possessive pronoun. Her can stand alone as an object pronoun, but the standalone possessive form is hers. Choose the form according to its job in the sentence, rather than assuming these words always need an immediately following noun.

Our team finished the project ahead of schedule.
この表現を使う理由: Our specifies who owns or comprises the team.

Replace Repeated Nouns with Possessive Pronouns
When you already named an object earlier in the conversation, repeating that noun makes your speech sound heavy and robotic. Possessive pronouns like mine, yours, hers, ours, and theirs bundle the owner and the noun together, creating clean and natural sentences without clumsy repetition.
-
My coffee is hot, but yours is already cold.
この表現を使う理由: Yours replaces your coffee so you do not have to repeat the noun.
-
We brought our tickets, and they brought theirs.
この表現を使う理由: Theirs stands for their tickets at the end of the second clause.

答えを見る
答え: ...and mine is in the garage.
Mine replaces my car entirely, so no noun should follow it.
Recognize Words That Share One Form
Most possessive adjectives add an s or change spelling when they become pronouns, such as your turning into yours and my turning into mine. However, the masculine word his keeps the exact same spelling in both roles. You must look at the sentence structure around it to know whether it modifies a noun or stands alone.
-
His phone rang during the meeting.
この表現を使う理由: His acts as an adjective before phone.
-
That coat on the rack is his.

Distinguish Its from It Is in Writing
One of the most frequent writing errors involves mixing up its and it is. The word its without an apostrophe shows possession for a thing, organization, or animal. The form with an apostrophe is always a contraction for it is or it has, never a possessive word.
-
The printer lost its network connection.
この表現を使う理由: Its shows that the network connection belongs to the printer.
-
It's time to replace the printer paper.
この表現を使う理由: It's is the contraction for it is.

Leave Apostrophes Off All Possessive Pronouns
Learners often see the final s on yours, hers, ours, and theirs and assume an apostrophe belongs before or after that s. English never uses apostrophes in possessive pronouns. These words are already fully possessive by nature, so adding punctuation creates an incorrect spelling.
-
That presentation slide was ours.
この表現を使う理由: Ours is spelled without an apostrophe.
-

Hear Stress and Vowel Shifts in Natural Speech
In spoken English, possessive adjectives usually carry lighter stress than the nouns they introduce. In contrast, possessive pronouns receive full sentence stress because they carry the central contrast of the thought. Pronouncing yours, hers, ours, and theirs with clear final consonants ensures your listener catches who owns what.
-
That blue umbrella is ours.
この表現を使う理由: The word ours carries final emphasis and a distinct vowel sound.
-
Is that lunch box yours?
この表現を使う理由: Yours receives stress at the end of the question.

答え: They replace the whole noun phrase and carry key information.
Because possessive pronouns stand in place of the entire noun phrase, they highlight the owner and receive sentence stress.
Confirm Shared Ownership Without Clumsy Phrasing
In shared workspaces or apartments, items often move around quickly. When someone asks whose item is on a counter, answering with a crisp pronoun resolves confusion immediately. Practice pairing a clear noun identification with a decisive possessive pronoun to keep daily workplace or home conversations smooth.
-

「Possessive Pronouns: Choose the Right Form」に関する質問
Can I use 'its' as a standalone possessive pronoun?
In standard modern English, 'its' is normally used as a possessive adjective before a noun; rare independent uses occur in phrases such as of its own. You do not say 'The bowl is its'. Instead, name the noun again or restructure the sentence to say 'The bowl belongs to the cat' or 'That is its bowl'.
The bird flew back to its nest.
That nest is its home.
Why is there no apostrophe in words like yours, hers, or ours?
Nouns use apostrophes to show possession, like Sarah's book or the company's goal. Possessive pronouns are already inherently possessive by definition. Adding an apostrophe turns the word into an incorrect form or a contraction, so yours, hers, ours, and theirs never take apostrophes.
The green umbrella is yours.
Those concert tickets are ours.
How do I choose quickly between 'my' and 'mine' during a conversation?
Check whether the possessive introduces a noun phrase, which may contain adjectives. If you are about to say the noun, use 'my', as in 'my coat'. If you already said the noun earlier and do not want to say it again, use 'mine', as in 'That coat is mine'. A possessive pronoun never comes right before the noun it owns.
My phone is on the counter.
The phone on the counter is mine.
What is the difference between 'their' and 'theirs'?
Use 'their' before a noun phrase to indicate group possession, such as 'their car' or 'their opinion'. Use 'theirs' when the noun has already been stated and you want to avoid repetition. Remember that 'theirs' already ends in s and never takes an apostrophe.
Their flight leaves at noon.
Our flight is delayed, but theirs is on time.
