Possessive adjectives: quick practical rules

What are possessive adjectives?

Possessive adjectives are 'my', 'your', 'his', 'her', 'its', 'our' and 'their'. They show who owns or connects with a noun and come before the noun phrase. For example, 'The children packed their school bags.' Choose the word for the owner, not the thing owned; use possessive pronouns when no noun follows.

ポイント

  • Choose the possessive adjective by identifying the owner.
  • Place possessive adjectives before the noun phrase.
  • Descriptive adjectives can come between them and the noun.
  • Possessive adjectives do not change before plural nouns.

詳しい説明

A possessive adjective is a modifying word placed before a noun to clarify who owns it or has a relationship with it. My refers to the speaker. Your refers to the person being addressed. His, her, and its indicate a single male, female, or non-human entity. Our indicates the speaker alongside others, while their denotes another group or an individual of unspecified gender.

Marcus parked his bicycle outside our building.

仕組み: His identifies Marcus as the owner of the bicycle, while our links the building to the speaker and coworkers.

Locate the owner before choosing a word

Before you write or speak, determine who actually possesses or connects with the object. English possessive adjectives always reflect the person or group that owns something, not the gender or number of the item itself. If Maria owns three cars, you say her cars because Maria is female and singular. If five technicians share one computer, you say their computer because the owners form a plural group. Checking the owner first prevents confusion with pronouns from other languages.

  • Carlos forgot his keys on the kitchen table.

仕組み: His reflects Carlos as the single male owner, while keys is plural.

  • The tenants painted their living room last weekend.

仕組み: Their matches the multiple tenants who share the single room.

A team of five architects completed a single project. Which phrase describes the project correctly?

答えを見る

答え: their project

Their reflects the plural group of owners and sits directly before the noun project.

Place the word directly before a noun

A possessive adjective cannot stand on its own at the end of a sentence. It functions like an article, pointing straight toward a noun or a noun phrase. You can insert descriptive adjectives between the possessive word and the noun, but the noun must appear somewhere in the phrase. For instance, you can say our tickets or our VIP tickets, but you cannot say the tickets are our. When the noun is absent, English requires a possessive pronoun instead.

  • Please put your warm jacket in the closet.

仕組み: Your modifies jacket, with the descriptive adjective warm placed between them.

  • We parked our electric car outside the building.

仕組み: Our introduces the full noun phrase electric car.

Your sits correctly before the noun phrase heavy backpack.

Select between his, her, and its for singular owners

When a single person, animal, or object owns something, select his, her, or its based on that specific entity. Use his for a man or boy, her for a woman or girl, and its for a business, device, place, or animal when the sex is unspecified. Learners often mistakenly match the pronoun to the object being owned, saying her father when speaking about a man. Always look backward to the owner to choose the correct third-person singular word.

  • Hannah brought her daughter to the company picnic.

仕組み: Her refers to Hannah, regardless of the gender of any other person.

  • The laptop shut down because its battery died.

仕組み: Its refers to the machine, not to the person using it.

答えを見る

答え: his soup

His matches the male chef who created the soup.

Avoid the apostrophe when spelling its

One of the most frequent spelling errors in written English involves its and it's. The form its with no apostrophe is a possessive adjective that shows ownership for things, organizations, and animals. The form it's with an apostrophe is always a contraction standing for it is or it has. If you cannot replace the word with it is in your sentence, you must drop the apostrophe. Test your sentence by reading it aloud with it is before you write.

  • The airline cancelled its morning flight to Chicago.

仕組み: Its indicates possession by the airline and cannot mean it is.

  • It's obvious that the engine needs fresh oil.

仕組み: It's expands directly to it is obvious.

あなたの番

Which sentence uses the possessive form of its correctly?

答えを見る

答え: The restaurant changed its lunch menu today.

Its shows possession by the restaurant and correctly has no apostrophe.

Express group ownership with our and their

When more than one person owns or shares something, choose between our and their by deciding whether you belong to the group. Use our when you are speaking for yourself and at least one other companion: our neighborhood, our budget, or our goal. Use their when describing a separate group of people, animals, companies, or things that does not include you. Using their also works in modern English when referring to a single individual whose gender is unknown or irrelevant.

  • My brother and I renewed our gym membership.

仕組み: Our includes the speaker and the speaker's brother.

  • The managers submitted their quarterly budget yesterday.

仕組み: Their refers to the management group without including the speaker.

あなたの番

You and your coworker finished a client proposal together. How do you describe the proposal?

答えを見る

答え: our proposal

Our includes both the speaker and the coworker in the ownership.

Keep the adjective unchanged before plural nouns

In many European and Romance languages, possessive words change their endings to agree with plural nouns. In English, possessive adjectives never change form. Whether you are talking about one passport or five passports, the word remains your, her, his, our, or their. Writing ours friends or theirs bags is an error that distracts native listeners. Keep the possessive word singular in appearance, and let the noun carry any plural marker such as -s or -es.

  • Our teacher checked our assignments after class.

仕組み: Our stays unchanged before both singular teacher and plural assignments.

  • They stored their bicycles in the garage.

仕組み: Their remains uninflected before the plural noun bicycles.

あなたの番

Which sentence handles plural agreement correctly?

答えを見る

答え: We packed our bags before breakfast.

Our does not change form before the plural noun bags.

Distinguish adjectives from standalone pronouns

Do not confuse possessive adjectives with possessive pronouns. Possessive adjectives must sit in front of a noun: my car, your turn, her idea, our office, their house. Possessive pronouns replace the entire noun phrase and stand alone: mine, yours, hers, ours, theirs. His can function as both an adjective and a pronoun, while its rarely appears alone. When you see a noun immediately following the slot, pick the adjective. When the noun has already been stated, choose the standalone pronoun.

  • This is my coat, and that one is yours.

仕組み: My modifies coat, while yours stands alone without repeating coat.

  • Her desk is clean, but his is covered with papers.

仕組み: Her precedes desk, whereas his acts as an independent pronoun.

あなたの番

Choose the correct word to complete: 'This is not my badge; it is _____.'

答えを見る

答え: hers

Hers stands alone at the end of the clause because no noun follows it.

Spot weak forms in spoken English

In natural conversational English, possessive adjectives rarely receive heavy sentence stress. Words like your, our, and his frequently reduce to short, weak pronunciations. Your often sounds like /jər/, our frequently rhymes with are /ɑːr/, and the initial /h/ in his or her may disappear entirely in rapid connected speech after a consonant. Training your ear to recognize these reduced forms helps you follow conversations and write accurate transcripts without missing unstressed grammatical markers.

  • Tell him to bring his ID card.

仕組み: His often sounds like /ɪz/ in fast speech, dropping the initial /h/ sound.

  • We should clean our desks before leaving.

仕組み: Our frequently reduces to a quick single syllable rhyming with are.

あなたの番

Why might a listener fail to hear the word 'his' in fast conversational speech?

答えを見る

答え: The initial /h/ sound often drops after consonants in fast speech.

In connected speech, unstressed pronouns and possessives often drop the initial /h/ sound.

「Possessive adjectives: quick practical rules」に関する質問

How do I choose between its and it's when writing?

Look at whether you need the words 'it is' or 'it has'. If you can expand the phrase to 'it is' or 'it has', use an apostrophe: it's. If you are describing something that belongs to an animal, organization, or object, use its with no apostrophe. A possessive adjective never takes an apostrophe in English.

The company doubled its profits this quarter.

It's difficult to predict next month's sales numbers.

What is the practical difference between their and theirs?

Their is a possessive adjective, which means it must sit directly before a noun: their car, their house, their opinion. Theirs is an independent possessive pronoun that stands by itself to replace the whole noun phrase: The red car is theirs. Never place a noun directly after theirs.

Their project won first prize at the science fair.

We finished our report, but theirs is still in review.

Do possessive adjectives become plural when the noun is plural?

No. In English, possessive adjectives do not change form for singular or plural nouns. You use our book and our books, or his key and his keys. Adding an -s ending to our or your before a noun is a mistake. Only the noun itself indicates whether there is one item or several items.

She organized her file before leaving.

She organized her files before leaving.

Why do some textbooks call these words possessive determiners?

Modern grammar frameworks classify my, your, his, her, its, our, and their as determiners because they occupy the same grammatical position as articles like 'a' or 'the'. Traditional grammar texts call them possessive adjectives because they modify nouns. Both terms describe the exact same set of seven words.

My manager approved the proposal this morning.
