Past simple questions: did and didn't

How do you use did and didn't in past simple questions?

Use did before the subject in past simple questions, and put didn't after the subject in negative statements. Follow both with the base form of the action verb: 'Did Maya bring her notes?' and 'Maya didn't bring her notes.' With the verb be, use was or were without did.

La explicación completa

A past simple question asks whether an action happened before now. A past simple negative states that an event did not take place. With ordinary verbs, did and did not show that the action is complete.

Did you send the project files yesterday morning?

Por qué funciona: Did begins the question, and send remains in its base form.

Start yes or no questions with did

When you want to know if an action happened in the past, place did at the very start of your question. Follow did with the person or thing doing the action, and then add the base form of your verb. This structure tells the listener immediately that you are asking about a completed event.

  • Did your manager approve the new budget?

Por qué funciona: Did opens the question before the subject your manager.

  • Did you receive our morning update?

Por qué funciona: Receive is the base verb following the subject you.

Keep the base form after did

Many learners accidentally put an ed ending or an irregular past form inside a question. Remember that did already carries the past time for the entire clause. Because the past marker is already present in did, your main verb must stay in its plain dictionary form without any past endings.

  • Did Elena finish the report before lunch?

Por qué funciona: Finish remains in its base form because did marks the past tense.

  • Did they see our presentation slides?

Por qué funciona: See is used instead of the irregular past form saw.

Add question words for specific information

If you need details such as a time, place, or reason, place a question word before did. Words like what, where, when, why, and how sit at the front of the sentence. The rest of the clause keeps the exact same order: did, followed by the subject, followed by the base verb.

  • Where did our clients stay during the visit?

Por qué funciona: Where comes first, followed by did, the subject, and the base verb stay.

  • When did you leave the office yesterday?

Por qué funciona: When asks for time, and leave stays in its base form.

State negative past actions with didn't

To say that an action did not occur in the past, place did not or the contraction didn't directly after the subject. In everyday spoken and written English, didn't is the standard choice. Both versions show that the event did not happen, while keeping the message polite, clear, and direct.

  • Lucas didn't sign the contract on Monday.

Por qué funciona: Didn't follows the subject Lucas to state that the action did not happen.

  • We did not receive any notification about the delay.

Por qué funciona: Did not provides a formal negative statement before receive.

Check for base verbs after didn't

A common slip in spoken English is keeping an irregular past verb after didn't. When speaking quickly, people sometimes say didn't went or didn't saw. Train your ear to listen for the base verb right after didn't. One past marker is all your sentence needs to be accurate.

  • Sara didn't go to the workshop yesterday.

Por qué funciona: Go is correct after didn't, rather than the irregular past form went.

  • The committee didn't choose a vendor this week.

Por qué funciona: Choose is the base verb, avoiding the past form chose.

Tu turno

Respuesta: We didn't speak to the landlord.

Speak is the base form. Do not use spoke after didn't.

Use negative questions to confirm facts

When you expect that something happened or want to express mild surprise, you can begin your question with didn't. Place didn't before the subject, and keep the main verb in its base form. This structure asks the listener to confirm information that you believed was already true.

  • Didn't you order extra paper for the printer?

Por qué funciona: Didn't opens the question to verify an action you expected.

  • Didn't Carlos call you about the flight change?

Por qué funciona: Didn't checks an expected call while call remains in its base form.

Separate was and were from did

The verb be does not use did for past questions or negatives. Instead, use was for singular subjects like I, he, she, and it, and were for plural subjects and you. Put was or were before the subject in questions, and add not directly after them for negatives.

  • Were you in the office when the alarm sounded?

Por qué funciona: Were begins the question with you without using did.

  • The train was not crowded this morning.

Por qué funciona: Was not creates the negative past for the singular noun train.

Notice how did sounds in fast speech

In casual conversation, native speakers often blend did and you together so they sound like didja or did-joo. The vowel in did can become very short and quiet. To catch these questions, focus on the base verb that follows the pronoun, which usually receives stronger vocal emphasis.

  • Did you catch the early bus?

Por qué funciona: Did and you blend smoothly, while catch receives primary stress.

  • Did you check the front door lock?

Por qué funciona: Check carries the main stress in natural spoken delivery.

Errores frecuentes

  • Evita esto: Did they took the bus?

Di: Did they take the bus?

Did marks the past, so the action verb stays in its base form.

  • Evita esto: Nina didn't bought a ticket.

Di: Nina didn't buy a ticket.

Use the base verb after didn't, not the past form.

  • Evita esto: Did you were at the museum?

Di: Were you at the museum?

Past questions with be use was or were without did.

Preguntas sobre «Past simple questions: did and didn't»

Why do we use the base verb after did instead of the past tense?

In English, an auxiliary verb carries grammatical time for the entire clause. Because did already signals the past simple, marking the main verb with an ed ending or irregular past form is redundant. Keeping the main verb in its base form makes the sentence grammatically clear and standard.

Did you invite your colleagues to lunch?

She didn't invite her colleagues to lunch.

Can you ever use did together with was or were?

No. The verb be acts as its own auxiliary in the past simple. You form questions by inverting was or were with the subject, and you form negatives by adding not after was or were. Combining did with be, was, or were creates an ungrammatical sentence in standard English.

Were you happy with the final presentation?

He was not present during the call.

When should I use a negative question like didn't you know?

Speakers use negative past questions when they expect a positive answer or want to express surprise. For example, if you believed someone received an important message, asking didn't you receive it expresses that expectation directly while inviting confirmation.

Didn't you hear the announcement earlier today?

Didn't our manager approve this request last week?

How do you give short answers to past simple questions?

To answer a yes or no question politely without repeating the full sentence, use the subject pronoun and did or didn't. Say yes, I did or no, I didn't. Do not repeat the main verb in these short responses.

Did you lock the storage room? Yes, I did.

Did they sign the invoice? No, they didn't.

Antes de irte

Recuerda esto

Use did before the subject for past questions, and didn't after the subject for negatives. Always pair both words with the base form of the main verb. Switch to was or were only when you describe states with the verb be.
