Bella (tutor) Welcome to MicroEnglish. Imagine that every cafe
2. 0:03
Bella (tutor) in your town buys its bread from the same bakery. Other
3. 0:07
Bella (tutor) bakeries exist, but none gets those orders. In
4. 0:11
Bella (tutor) this B2 lesson, we'll explore why someone might say that bakery
5. 0:14
Bella (tutor) has cornered the market, and when that description fits.
6. 0:19
Bella (tutor) Start with the customers: local cafes. Next,
7. 0:23
Bella (tutor) identify the competitors: bakeries that could supply them.
8. 0:27
Bella (tutor) Finally, look at the orders. If one bakery wins
9. 0:30
Bella (tutor) practically all the business, it holds a dominant position.
10. 0:34
Bella (tutor) Here, the market is bread supplied to local cafes,
11. 0:38
Bella (tutor) not everything people buy.
12. 0:40
Bella (tutor) At first, our bakery supplied two cafes. Then
13. 0:44
Bella (tutor) its reliable early deliveries attracted nearly every cafe nearby.
14. 0:49
Bella (tutor) We can now say, they've cornered the local market for cafe
15. 0:53
Bella (tutor) bread. The expression describes gaining dominant control,
16. 0:57
Bella (tutor) or becoming much more successful than competitors in a particular
17. 1:00
    Bella (tutor) product area.
18. 1:02
Bella (tutor) A business can be successful without cornering the market.
19. 1:05
Bella (tutor) Perhaps all three bakeries sell more bread this year. That's
20. 1:09
Bella (tutor) growth, but it doesn't show dominance. Corner the market
21. 1:13
Bella (tutor) makes a stronger claim: one business has gained a position
22. 1:16
Bella (tutor) that leaves competitors with relatively little room.
23. 1:19
Bella (tutor) Corner is a regular verb here. Use cornered
24. 1:23
Bella (tutor) for the past, or have cornered when the result matters now.
25. 1:27
    Bella (tutor) They aim to corner the market describes an ambition;
26. 1:30
Bella (tutor) it doesn't mean they've achieved it. Keep the article the in
27. 1:34
Bella (tutor) the expression, even when you add a description.
28. 1:38
Bella (tutor) Listen to the phrase as a unit: they've cornered the market
29. 1:41
Bella (tutor) for cafe bread. The word the is usually light
30. 1:45
Bella (tutor) and short. Give cornered and market enough weight to make the
31. 1:48
Bella (tutor) main idea clear. You can then name the product without starting
32. 1:52
    Bella (tutor) a new sentence.
33. 1:54
Bella (tutor) The size of the market matters. A firm might dominate
34. 1:57
Bella (tutor) school uniforms in one town while remaining small nationally.
35. 2:02
Bella (tutor) Name the place or product when your listener needs that detail.
36. 2:05
Bella (tutor) The market for repair kits and the repair kit market are
37. 2:09
Bella (tutor) both useful ways to identify the business area.
38. 2:12
Bella (tutor) A common learner error is dropping the: they cornered market.
39. 2:17
Bella (tutor) Say they cornered the market. Also, corner
40. 2:21
Bella (tutor) doesn't mean opening a shop on a street corner here. It describes
41. 2:24
Bella (tutor) the company's position among competitors, so the location of
42. 2:28
Bella (tutor) its building tells us nothing about whether the phrase applies.
43. 2:32
Bella (tutor) You'll hear this expression in business discussions and news,
44. 2:35
Bella (tutor) and sometimes in playful conversation. It can suggest admiration
45. 2:39
Bella (tutor) or concern, depending on context. It doesn't automatically
46. 2:43
Bella (tutor) mean illegal behaviour. In a careful report, support
47. 2:47
Bella (tutor) the claim with evidence, such as a very large share of customers
48. 2:50
    Bella (tutor) or sales.
49. 2:52
Bella (tutor) Now listen to four conversations, two British and two American.
50. 2:56
Bella (tutor) Decide what the details tell you, rather than choosing an answer
51. 3:00
Bella (tutor) just because you hear the expression. After each explanation,
52. 3:04
Bella (tutor) the same audio plays again. Use that second listen to
53. 3:08
Bella (tutor) connect the key words with your answer.
54. 3:10
Bella (tutor) George and Alice are comparing postcard suppliers.
55. 3:14
Bella (tutor) What evidence do you hear for Alice's conclusion?
56. 3:17
George Nine of the ten museum shops order their postcards from Paper
57. 3:21
    George Finch.
58. 3:21
George They've cornered the local museum postcard market,
59. 3:25
    Alice then.
60. 3:25
Alice Yes. The other printers barely get a look- in.
61. 3:34
Bella (tutor) Almost every museum shop orders from that supplier.
62. 3:38
Bella (tutor) That wide customer base supports the claim; nobody mentions
63. 3:42
    Bella (tutor) its prices.
64. 3:43
George Nine of the ten museum shops order their postcards from Paper
65. 3:47
    George Finch.
66. 3:47
George They've cornered the local museum postcard market,
67. 3:51
    Alice then.
68. 3:51
Alice Yes. The other printers barely get a look- in.
69. 3:55
Bella (tutor) Roger has good news about an app. Listen for why Jessica
70. 3:59
    Bella (tutor) challenges his interpretation.
71. 4:02
Roger Our fitness app doubled its downloads. We've cornered the market!
72. 4:06
Roger Have we? Two rival apps still have ten times as
73. 4:09
    Jessica many users.
74. 4:11
Jessica Fair point. We're growing, but we're still small.
75. 4:20
Bella (tutor) The two larger rivals are the clue. Doubling downloads
76. 4:24
Bella (tutor) shows growth, but their app still trails its competitors.
77. 4:28
Roger Our fitness app doubled its downloads. We've cornered the market!
78. 4:32
Roger Have we? Two rival apps still have ten times as
79. 4:36
    Jessica many users.
80. 4:37
Jessica Fair point. We're growing, but we're still small.
81. 4:42
Bella (tutor) Alice describes a clothing company's plans. Has
82. 4:45
Bella (tutor) it already reached its goal?
83. 4:47
Alice That clothing firm wants to corner the school uniform market
84. 4:51
    Alice here.
85. 4:51
Alice How many schools does it supply?
86. 4:53
George Only one so far. It's bidding
87. 4:57
Alice for the others next month.
88. 5:04
Bella (tutor) No. Wants to describes its goal, while only
89. 5:08
Bella (tutor) one school tells us its current reach is limited.
90. 5:11
Alice That clothing firm wants to corner the school uniform market
91. 5:15
    Alice here.
92. 5:15
Alice How many schools does it supply?
93. 5:17
George Only one so far. It's bidding
94. 5:21
Alice for the others next month.
95. 5:23
Bella (tutor) Jessica needs filters for a machine. What problem
96. 5:27
Bella (tutor) does she see in this market?
97. 5:29
Jessica One company has cornered the market for filters that
98. 5:32
    Jessica fit this machine.
99. 5:33
Jessica And it just raised its prices again.
100. 5:37
Roger Exactly. We have no real choice of supplier.
101. 5:46
Bella (tutor) She says they have no real choice. The company controls supply,
102. 5:51
Bella (tutor) and the price rise makes that dependence a concern.
103. 5:54
Jessica One company has cornered the market for filters that
104. 5:58
     Jessica fit this machine.
105. 5:59
Jessica And it just raised its prices again.
106. 6:02
Roger Exactly. We have no real choice of supplier.
107. 6:06
Bella (tutor) Say this aloud: they've cornered the local market for fresh
108. 6:10
Bella (tutor) pasta. Now replace fresh pasta with another product.
109. 6:14
Bella (tutor) Imagine a business that supplies nearly everyone in that area,
110. 6:18
Bella (tutor) so your sentence makes a clear claim about dominance.
111. 6:28
     Bella (tutor) Does the company need every single sale? No;
112. 6:32
Bella (tutor) speakers often mean overwhelming dominance. Does that guarantee
113. 6:35
Bella (tutor) profit? No, because costs also matter. And
114. 6:39
Bella (tutor) the expression alone doesn't accuse anyone of wrongdoing. Listen
115. 6:43
Bella (tutor) to the surrounding details before deciding whether the speaker
116. 6:46
Bella (tutor) approves or feels concerned.
117. 6:49
Bella (tutor) It's useful in work meetings when your claim is justified.
118. 6:53
Bella (tutor) The core expression uses the market, though a market is possible
119. 6:56
Bella (tutor) when discussing one of several markets. You may also hear humorous
120. 7:00
Bella (tutor) extensions, such as she's cornered the market in terrible excuses.
121. 7:05
     Bella (tutor) That's deliberate exaggeration.
