Please contact me or myself: Which is correct?

When you invite someone to get in touch, write 'Please contact me'. In any request that begins with please, the understood subject is you, meaning the reader or listener. The other person takes the action of contacting, while you receive that message. Because you receive the action, English requires the standard object pronoun me. Write myself only when the subject and object refer to the exact same individual.

English pronouns change form depending on their grammatical position in a sentence. The word I acts as a subject performing an action, while me acts as an object receiving an action. The verb contact connects directly to its object without any preposition. Write contact me, call me, or email me. By contrast, verbs like send or speak connect through prepositions: send a message to me, or speak with me.

Reflexive pronouns like myself reflect an action back onto the person performing it. Use myself only when I is already the subject of the clause and receives that exact action. An emphatic pronoun gives extra personal emphasis to a subject. In business emails and official flyers, some people choose myself because they imagine it sounds more polite or formal than me. This habit is common, but in standard edited English, myself does not serve as a polite upgrade for me. The word me is courteous, direct, and completely appropriate for professional communication. You do not need to shield the reader from the pronoun me; direct and accurate requests build confidence.

When listening to native speakers, pay attention to syllable counts and stress patterns. The pronoun me has a single syllable that usually joins smoothly with the preceding verb, as in 'contact me' or 'tell me'. The pronoun myself contains two distinct syllables, with strong acoustic stress falling on the second syllable, self. If you hear a quick single vowel sound after the verb, you are hearing me. If you hear a rhythmic jump to a stressed second syllable, the speaker is saying myself.

To produce natural sentences from memory, follow a clear mental routine. First, determine who performs the action and who receives it. If someone else reaches out to you, write 'contact me'. Second, if you include a co-worker or volunteer, test the sentence by temporarily removing their name. Third, use myself only when you refer back to I or emphasize your own personal action. Practicing this routine will help you write accurate notices and emails without second-guessing yourself.
