Bella (tutor) Welcome to MicroEnglish. In this B2 lesson, imagine
2. 0:04
Bella (tutor) your neighbours want to turn an empty plot into a community
3. 0:06
Bella (tutor) garden. There's plenty to plan before anyone picks a tomato.
4. 0:10
Bella (tutor) Today, we'll use from the ground up to describe work
5. 0:14
Bella (tutor) that begins with the basics.
6. 0:16
Bella (tutor) First, the group checks the soil and plans how water
7. 0:20
Bella (tutor) will reach the beds. Then they design paths and choose plants.
8. 0:24
Bella (tutor) They're building a community garden from the ground up. The
9. 0:28
Bella (tutor) expression highlights the whole process, starting at its most
10. 0:31
    Bella (tutor) basic level.
11. 0:33
Bella (tutor) Think of a foundation supporting everything above it. This
12. 0:37
Bella (tutor) gives us one central meaning, not several separate meanings.
13. 0:41
Bella (tutor) We can apply it to a garden, a business, a computer system
14. 0:45
Bella (tutor) or someone's knowledge. The focus stays on developing
15. 0:48
Bella (tutor) something thoroughly from the basics.
16. 0:51
Bella (tutor) Use the expression after the thing being built, designed
17. 0:55
Bella (tutor) or learned. They built the business from the ground up. She
18. 0:59
Bella (tutor) learned accounting from the ground up. Change the verb for
19. 1:03
Bella (tutor) time as usual. The words from the ground up stay
20. 1:07
Bella (tutor) together and don't change.
21. 1:09
Bella (tutor) By summer, the neighbours have beds, paths and a watering system.
22. 1:14
Bella (tutor) Saying they developed the garden from the ground up draws attention
23. 1:17
Bella (tutor) to everything behind that result. They didn't simply add
24. 1:21
Bella (tutor) flowers to a finished garden. They worked on its basic structure
25. 1:25
    Bella (tutor) too.
26. 1:26
Bella (tutor) Listen to the complete phrase: from the ground up. From
27. 1:30
Bella (tutor) and the are often light, while ground and up are clearer.
28. 1:34
Bella (tutor) Let ground connect smoothly to up. Practise
29. 1:38
Bella (tutor) inside a sentence: We designed it from the ground up. You
30. 1:42
Bella (tutor) don't need a pause before up.
31. 1:44
Bella (tutor) From scratch often means starting without a prepared version
32. 1:47
Bella (tutor) or previous work to use. From the ground up emphasises
33. 1:52
Bella (tutor) foundations and complete development. They overlap:
34. 1:56
Bella (tutor) you could build a website from scratch or from the ground up.
35. 1:59
Bella (tutor) But making soup from scratch is the usual choice for cooking
36. 2:02
    Bella (tutor) with basic ingredients.
37. 2:05
Bella (tutor) A common mistake is leaving out the: from ground up. Keep
38. 2:09
Bella (tutor) the article, and remember the final up. Also, rebuilding
39. 2:13
Bella (tutor) from the ground up doesn't mean forgetting all your experience.
40. 2:16
Bella (tutor) You can use existing knowledge while completely rethinking
41. 2:20
Bella (tutor) how something is built.
42. 2:21
Bella (tutor) Repainting one planter wouldn't normally justify this expression.
43. 2:25
Bella (tutor) Redesigning the whole garden could. It suits
44. 2:29
Bella (tutor) everyday conversation and professional discussion, especially
45. 2:32
Bella (tutor) when explaining substantial work. It is used in both British
46. 2:36
Bella (tutor) and American English. Context tells us whether the
47. 2:40
Bella (tutor) foundations are physical or figurative.
48. 2:43
Bella (tutor) Now listen to four short conversations. Focus
49. 2:47
Bella (tutor) on what the speakers' words suggest about the work or learning
50. 2:50
Bella (tutor) involved. Choose an answer before checking the explanation.
51. 2:54
Bella (tutor) On the replay, listen for the detail that supports your choice.
52. 2:58
Bella (tutor) George and Alice discuss a booking system. Listen
53. 3:02
Bella (tutor) for the scale of the planned changes.
54. 3:05
George Are you just changing the colours on the booking page?
55. 3:07
George No, we're redesigning it from the ground up,
56. 3:11
Alice including how bookings are stored.
57. 3:13
Alice Then we'll need to test more than its appearance.
58. 3:22
Bella (tutor) They plan a complete redesign. Alice mentions how bookings
59. 3:25
Bella (tutor) are stored, which is a basic part of how the system works.
60. 3:29
George Are you just changing the colours on the booking page?
61. 3:32
George No, we're redesigning it from the ground up,
62. 3:35
Alice including how bookings are stored.
63. 3:37
Alice Then we'll need to test more than its appearance.
64. 3:41
Bella (tutor) Jessica is choosing a photography course. What can
65. 3:45
Bella (tutor) you infer about the kind of teaching she needs?
66. 3:48
Roger This course teaches photography from the ground
67. 3:51
Roger up: light, camera settings, then portraits.
68. 3:55
Roger Perfect. I usually just press the button and
69. 3:59
    Jessica hope.
70. 3:59
Jessica Then the first lessons should help.
71. 4:08
Bella (tutor) She needs the basics. Roger mentions light and camera
72. 4:12
Bella (tutor) settings, and Jessica admits that she currently just presses
73. 4:15
    Bella (tutor) the button.
74. 4:16
Roger This course teaches photography from the ground
75. 4:20
Roger up: light, camera settings, then portraits.
76. 4:24
Roger Perfect. I usually just press the button and
77. 4:27
    Jessica hope.
78. 4:28
Jessica Then the first lessons should help.
79. 4:31
Bella (tutor) Alice asks about a bicycle repair business. What
80. 4:35
Bella (tutor) does George reveal about its beginnings?
81. 4:38
Alice Did your aunt buy an existing repair shop?
82. 4:41
Alice No, she built the business from the ground up, fixing
83. 4:44
    George bikes in her shed.
84. 4:45
George So she had to find those first customers herself.
85. 4:55
Bella (tutor) His aunt developed it herself. Starting in a shed
86. 4:59
Bella (tutor) and finding the first customers show her involvement from the
87. 5:02
    Bella (tutor) earliest stage.
88. 5:04
Alice Did your aunt buy an existing repair shop?
89. 5:07
Alice No, she built the business from the ground up, fixing
90. 5:11
    George bikes in her shed.
91. 5:12
George So she had to find those first customers herself.
92. 5:16
Bella (tutor) Roger suggests a quick update to staff training. Listen
93. 5:20
Bella (tutor) for Jessica's view of the problem.
94. 5:23
Roger Could we update the slides and keep the training schedule?
95. 5:26
Roger We need to rebuild it from the ground up, starting with
96. 5:30
Jessica what new staff need to learn.
97. 5:31
Jessica Let's agree on that before editing any slides.
98. 5:41
Bella (tutor) She thinks the training needs a complete rethink. Starting
99. 5:45
Bella (tutor) with what new staff need to learn means reconsidering its basic
100. 5:48
     Bella (tutor) purpose and content.
101. 5:50
Roger Could we update the slides and keep the training schedule?
102. 5:54
Roger We need to rebuild it from the ground up, starting with
103. 5:58
Jessica what new staff need to learn.
104. 5:59
Jessica Let's agree on that before editing any slides.
105. 6:04
Bella (tutor) Say this aloud: I'd like to learn coding from the ground up.
106. 6:08
Bella (tutor) Now replace coding with a subject you want to understand. Keep
107. 6:12
Bella (tutor) the complete expression, and make the sentence true for you.
108. 6:22
Bella (tutor) The ground can be figurative, so the phrase works well
109. 6:25
Bella (tutor) beyond construction. It doesn't tell us how many people did
110. 6:29
Bella (tutor) the work. And although from scratch can sometimes replace it,
111. 6:33
Bella (tutor) the emphasis shifts towards starting without a prepared version.
112. 6:37
Bella (tutor) Keep the small words even when you speak quickly. The expression
113. 6:41
Bella (tutor) is suitable at work, but choose it when the scope deserves
114. 6:44
Bella (tutor) it. Rebuild fits naturally because an existing project
115. 6:48
Bella (tutor) may need its whole structure reconsidered. Previous experience
116. 6:52
Bella (tutor) can still guide the work.

Bella (tutor) ground up and explain your first basic step. For
124. 7:18
Bella (tutor) example, I would design a language course from the ground up,
125. 7:22
Bella (tutor) starting with learners' goals. Ask any questions you have
