A finite verb is a verb form limited by person, number, or tense. Finite verbs can express tense and sometimes change with the subject; modal verbs are also finite even when their form stays the same. Forms like to open or opening do not change for the subject on their own, so they are non-finite; they can appear within a finite clause or head a non-finite clause.
