Nevertheless means despite that, even so, or in spite of what was just mentioned. It acknowledges an existing difficulty, limit, or opposing circumstance without canceling it out. The listener understands that both facts are true, but the second fact occurred regardless of the first.
The route was steep and rocky. Nevertheless, the hikers reached the summit before sunset.
