Tell or Say: Choosing the Right Verb

When you decide between these two reporting verbs, begin by looking at the word that appears directly after the blank. If the receiver of the information is named immediately, the verb tell is almost always your correct choice. That listener can be a specific name like David, a pronoun such as me, us, or them, or a noun phrase like the team. Tell connects the speaker directly to the listener before moving forward to the information.

The verb say focuses attention on the words that were spoken or on the basic message itself. You use say when you want to report an idea, a short phrase, a quotation, or a that-clause without naming a receiver right away. In standard English, putting a personal pronoun directly after say sounds unnatural. When your sentence proceeds straight into what was communicated rather than who heard it, choose say.
