In vs into: choose the right preposition

Can I say 'put something in' instead of 'put something into'?

In marks location, enclosure, or a stable state where no boundary is being crossed. Into marks directional movement from an outside area toward an inside space, or an abstract transformation from one condition to another.

Key points

  • Use in when an object is already positioned inside an area.
  • Use into when an action moves an object across a boundary or changes something into a different form.
  • Check whether movement stays within one room or enters from outside.

Check whether an object crosses a boundary

When you describe where something sits, stays, or rests, use in. When an action carries a person or object across an edge or boundary into an enclosed space, use into. The starting question is always whether the subject was already inside before the action started.

  • The extra notebooks are in the storage cabinet.

Why it works: The notebooks already rest inside the cabinet, so in marks their stationary position.

  • Marcus slipped the envelope into his coat pocket.

Why it works: The envelope travels from outside the pocket to the inside space.

Your turn

Choose the correct word: The mechanic left the wrench ___ the toolbox after cleaning it.

Show the answer

Answer: in

The wrench is resting inside the toolbox after the cleaning is finished. Because this describes a location rather than movement across a border, in is correct.

Match direction verbs with into

Action verbs like step, slide, pour, push, and throw usually take into when they send something inside an enclosure. Learners often default to in because casual speech accepts it, but into clearly signals entry and direction in clear spoken English and formal writing.

  • Elena poured cold water into an open glass pitcher.

Why it works: The liquid moves from the bottle into the glass container.

  • The courier carried three packages into our lobby.

Why it works: The packages begin on the street and pass through the front door.

You can practise this again in No, Not, None, or Never: Choose the Right Word and their there they're: choose the right word.

Your turn

Which sentence clearly emphasizes entering a new space?

Show the answer

Answer: David carried his laptop into the small break room.

The verb carried paired with into shows active motion crossing the doorway from outside the room to inside.

Separate internal motion from entering

Movement does not always require into. If an action happens entirely inside one room, park, or building, choose in. A runner jogging laps inside a sports hall is running in the hall. They only run into the hall when they enter it from the street outside.

  • The children were jumping in their bedroom.

Why it works: The activity remains completely inside the bedroom walls.

  • The children ran into their bedroom when the bell rang.

Why it works: The children crossed the doorway from the hallway into the room.

Your turn

Choose the sentence where movement stays entirely inside an enclosed area.

Show the answer

Answer: The manager walked back and forth in the conference room.

Walking back and forth describes movement contained within the room, so in is the proper preposition.

Use into for changes in state or form

English uses into when a person, process, or material changes from one condition to another. Verbs like turn, transform, convert, and translate take into because the subject crosses an abstract boundary to arrive at a fresh outcome or identity. Always look for this shift in condition before choosing your preposition.

  • The architect turned an old brick warehouse into modern offices.

Why it works: The building changes its entire structural purpose and appearance.

  • Our team translated the customer survey into Spanish.

Why it works: The text shifts from its original form into a new language version.

Your turn

Complete the sentence: Freezing temperatures transformed the standing rain ___ ice.

Show the answer

Answer: into

Transform takes into to mark the change from liquid water to solid ice.

Choose prepositions for personal vehicles

Vehicles cause frequent confusion for learners. You step into or get into a passenger car, taxi, or small boat because you must bend down to sit inside an enclosed cabin. By contrast, public buses, trains, and planes use on because passengers stand and walk along an aisle.

  • Teresa got into the taxi outside the central station.

Why it works: A taxi is an enclosed private automobile requiring entry into a low seat.

  • We stepped into the rideshare vehicle before the rain intensified.

Why it works: The motion moves the passengers from the open sidewalk into the car interior.

Your turn

Which phrase correctly shows entering a personal automobile?

Show the answer

Answer: get into a taxi

Enclosed private cars take get into when you enter their cabin.

Separate the preposition into from in to

Do not confuse the single word into with two separate words written as in to. In phrasal verbs like log in, drop in, turn in, or hand in, the word in belongs to the verb. The word to is an infinitive marker or preposition introducing an action or destination.

  • Please log in to your account using two-factor authentication.

Why it works: Log in is the phrasal verb, and to introduces the destination platform.

  • He dropped in to see how our new project was progressing.

Why it works: Drop in functions as a unit meaning visit, followed by the infinitive to see.

Your turn

Choose the correct spelling: Sandra went online to log ___ her bank profile.

Show the answer

Answer: in to

Log in is a phrasal verb. The particle in attaches to log, while to connects to the destination profile.

Hear the rhythm of into in natural speech

In connected speech, speakers rarely pronounce into with two heavy, separated beats. The first syllable carries the primary stress, while the final vowel often shortens before consonants. Listeners must catch the quick /ɪn/ onset rather than waiting for an exaggerated second syllable. Notice how smoothly it connects to following nouns.

  • Pack your lunch into a cooler.

Why it works: Stress hits the first syllable of into, linking smoothly to the following vowel sound.

  • Walk into an office.

Why it works: The final vowel of into connects directly to the vowel an without a pause.

Your turn

Where does stress fall when a speaker pronounces the preposition into?

Show the answer

Answer: On the first syllable

The preposition into places its primary acoustic stress on the first syllable /ɪn/.

Avoid redundant prepositions with enter

A frequent error in formal essays and emails is writing enter into a room. The verb enter already contains the meaning of going inside. In physical contexts, write enter the room or walk into the room. Save enter into for legal agreements or formal negotiations.

  • The inspector entered the building at nine in the morning.

Why it works: Enter directly takes the direct object without a preposition for physical structures.

  • The two companies entered into a partnership last winter.

Why it works: Enter into is an established legal idiom meaning to begin an agreement or contract.

Your turn

Select the sentence with natural physical movement that avoids redundancy.

Show the answer

Answer: The technician walked into the server room.

Walk into pairs the physical action verb with into. Saying entered into for a physical room is redundant.

Before you go

Remember this

Use in when an object is already positioned inside an area. Use into when an action moves an object across a boundary or changes something into a different form. Check whether movement stays within one room or enters from outside.

Questions about "In vs into: choose the right preposition"

Can I say 'put something in' instead of 'put something into'?

Yes, everyday spoken English frequently uses in after put, as in 'put the milk in the fridge.' However, into is always grammatically precise because the item crosses from outside to inside. In formal writing and language tests, into is preferred when emphasizing movement across an entrance or opening.

He put the keys into his pocket before locking the door.

She put the milk in the refrigerator.

Why do teachers say 'enter into' is wrong for buildings?

The verb enter already means 'to go into' a space. Saying 'enter into the room' repeats the idea of entry redundantly. Use 'enter the room' or 'walk into the room.' Reserve 'enter into' for figurative meanings, such as entering into a contract, an agreement, or a debate.

The committee entered the auditorium together.

Both companies agreed to enter into a formal contract.

How do I know whether to write 'in to' as one word or two words?

Look at whether the word in is attached to a preceding phrasal verb. In phrases like 'log in,' 'drop in,' or 'turn in,' in forms an inseparable part of that verb. The word to that follows introduces an action or recipient. If the word indicates directional movement inside a physical boundary, write the single preposition into.

Remember to log in to the employee dashboard.

The cat slipped quietly into the bedroom.

Why do we get into a car but get on a train?

English distinguishes vehicles by their size and how passengers enter them. For small personal vehicles like cars, taxis, and small boats, you crouch down to sit directly inside, requiring into. For large public transit like buses, trains, and planes, you step up onto a deck and walk down an aisle, so English uses on.

Get into the taxi before the traffic light changes.

We got on the express train just before departure.
