An independent clause contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought, meaning it can function alone as a full sentence. A dependent clause also contains a subject and a verb, but it starts with a subordinating word like because, if, although, or when. This opening word turns the statement into supporting background that depends on a main clause to make full sense.
Although the road was slippery, Marcus drove the delivery van safely.
