A subjunctive structure signals that an action is an idea, a necessity, or an unreal wish rather than an established real-world fact. In clauses following verbs of advice or urgency, English uses the plain base verb without tense or agreement markers. In hypothetical statements, were marks a clear distance from the present reality.
