1. 0:00
Bella (tutor) Welcome to MicroEnglish! In this B2 lesson, you're
2. 0:03
Bella (tutor) working at a returns desk. One assistant follows every step
3. 0:07
Bella (tutor) of the policy. Another asks a manager to allow an exception.
4. 0:11
Bella (tutor) Which one is doing things by the book? Let's follow the return
5. 0:15
   Bella (tutor) and find out.
6. 0:16
Bella (tutor) For our imaginary shop, the procedure has three steps:
7. 0:21
Bella (tutor) check the purchase date, confirm the problem, and record the
8. 0:24
Bella (tutor) refund. Doing the return by the book means following the
9. 0:27
Bella (tutor) official rules exactly. The book represents the rules
10. 0:31
Bella (tutor) or procedure; there doesn't have to be a physical book.
11. 0:35
Bella (tutor) Suppose the customer arrives one day late. A strict
12. 0:38
Bella (tutor) approach refuses the return because the deadline has passed.
13. 0:42
Bella (tutor) A flexible approach asks whether an exception is possible.
14. 0:46
Bella (tutor) But flexibility doesn't always break the rules. If
15. 0:49
Bella (tutor) the policy allows a manager to approve exceptions, that can
16. 0:52
Bella (tutor) still be by the book.
17. 0:54
Bella (tutor) Now Maya handles a faulty kettle returned on time.
18. 0:58
Bella (tutor) She checks the receipt, inspects the kettle, and logs the refund.
19. 1:02
Bella (tutor) Her colleague says, Maya processed the refund by
20. 1:06
Bella (tutor) the book. This describes how she worked. It doesn't
21. 1:09
Bella (tutor) tell us whether she was friendly, fast, or pleased about the
22. 1:13
    Bella (tutor) task.
23. 1:15
Bella (tutor) The phrase often follows an action: we do everything
24. 1:18
Bella (tutor) by the book. She handled the complaint by the book. You
25. 1:22
Bella (tutor) change the verb for time, but the expression stays the same.
26. 1:26
Bella (tutor) It's especially useful when discussing how someone manages
27. 1:29
Bella (tutor) a task, an investigation, or a workplace process.
28. 1:33
Bella (tutor) Listen to the rhythm: by the book. Book usually carries
29. 1:37
Bella (tutor) the strongest stress, while the is light. Try
30. 1:41
Bella (tutor) attaching the whole phrase to an action: we checked it by the
31. 1:44
Bella (tutor) book. Let the words connect, without making each one
32. 1:48
    Bella (tutor) equally strong.
33. 1:50
Bella (tutor) In a laboratory, missing a check could affect a result.
34. 1:54
Bella (tutor) Working by the book can help protect safety and keep standards
35. 1:57
Bella (tutor) consistent. The phrase can express approval here. In
36. 2:01
Bella (tutor) another setting, a frustrated colleague might use it to criticise
37. 2:05
Bella (tutor) someone who won't consider a reasonable exception.
38. 2:08
Bella (tutor) Following a procedure and getting a good result are related,
39. 2:12
Bella (tutor) but they aren't identical. By the book focuses on the rules.
40. 2:16
Bella (tutor) It's natural in workplace conversation. In a formal report,
41. 2:21
Bella (tutor) follow the prescribed procedure may be more precise. Your
42. 2:24
Bella (tutor) tone shows whether you admire or dislike the strictness.
43. 2:29
Bella (tutor) A common mistake is rebuilding the expression word by word.
44. 2:32
Bella (tutor) Keep by and the: by the book. You
45. 2:36
Bella (tutor) can also say according to the rules, but according to book
46. 2:39
Bella (tutor) isn't natural. Learn the complete phrase, then choose
47. 2:43
Bella (tutor) a verb that fits your situation.
48. 2:45
Bella (tutor) You'll hear two British and two American conversations.
49. 2:49
Bella (tutor) Choose what the words suggest about each situation. Notice
50. 2:53
Bella (tutor) reasons, reactions, and next steps. After the explanation,
51. 2:57
Bella (tutor) the same recording plays with captions so you can check the
52. 3:00
Bella (tutor) clue. Pause if you need more thinking time.
53. 3:04
Bella (tutor) At reception, Alice wants to enter the building. Listen
54. 3:08
Bella (tutor) for what prevents her.
55. 3:10
Alice Can you let me up? You know me.
56. 3:12
Alice Sorry, we do this by the book. I need your photo ID.
57. 3:15
George Right, I'll get it from my bag.
58. 3:23
Bella (tutor) George knows Alice, but still needs her ID. Personal
59. 3:28
Bella (tutor) recognition doesn't replace the required check.
60. 3:31
Alice Can you let me up? You know me.
61. 3:33
Alice Sorry, we do this by the book. I need your photo ID.
62. 3:37
George Right, I'll get it from my bag.
63. 3:40
Bella (tutor) Roger and Jessica discuss a small expense. What is Roger's
64. 3:44
    Bella (tutor) reaction?
65. 3:45
Roger Two signatures for a six-dollar claim?
66. 3:48
Roger Finance does everything by the book. Even small claims need
67. 3:52
    Jessica both.
68. 3:52
Jessica This is taking longer than the trip!
69. 3:59
Bella (tutor) Roger questions needing two signatures for a small amount.
70. 4:03
Bella (tutor) His final comment makes the frustration clear.
71. 4:07
Roger Two signatures for a six-dollar claim?
72. 4:10
Roger Finance does everything by the book. Even small claims need
73. 4:13
    Jessica both.
74. 4:14
Jessica This is taking longer than the trip!
75. 4:16
Bella (tutor) A delivery is waiting. Listen for Alice's priority before
76. 4:20
    Bella (tutor) work starts.
77. 4:21
George The delivery's here. Can we skip the lift checks?
78. 4:25
George No, we do those by the book. People could get hurt.
79. 4:28
Alice All right. The boxes can wait.
80. 4:36
Bella (tutor) Alice rejects the shortcut because people could get hurt. She
81. 4:40
Bella (tutor) wants the full safety check completed.
82. 4:42
George The delivery's here. Can we skip the lift checks?
83. 4:46
George No, we do those by the book. People could get hurt.
84. 4:49
Alice All right. The boxes can wait.
85. 4:52
Bella (tutor) A hiring decision is being questioned. Why does Jessica sound
86. 4:55
    Bella (tutor) confident?
87. 4:57
Roger An applicant has challenged our decision.
88. 4:59
Roger We did it by the book: same questions for everyone,
89. 5:03
    Jessica all scores saved.
90. 5:04
Jessica Good. We can show the review team.
91. 5:13
Bella (tutor) The same questions and saved scores are evidence of a consistent
92. 5:17
Bella (tutor) process. Those details support her confidence.
93. 5:21
Roger An applicant has challenged our decision.
94. 5:23
Roger We did it by the book: same questions for everyone,
95. 5:27
    Jessica all scores saved.
96. 5:28
Jessica Good. We can show the review team.
97. 5:32
Bella (tutor) Say this aloud: we handle complaints by the book. Now
98. 5:36
Bella (tutor) add a reason, such as, so every customer gets fair treatment.
99. 5:40
Bella (tutor) Use the speaking time to make your own version. You could
100. 5:43
Bella (tutor) talk about checking equipment, approving expenses, or recording
101. 5:47
     Bella (tutor) payments.
102. 5:55
Bella (tutor) Remember that the meaning stays focused on rules, while
103. 5:58
Bella (tutor) the speaker's attitude can change. Listen for comments like,
104. 6:02
Bella (tutor) that keeps us safe, or, this takes forever. Those
105. 6:06
Bella (tutor) clues help you hear approval or criticism without inventing
106. 6:09
Bella (tutor) a different meaning for the expression.
107. 6:12
Bella (tutor) Outside work, you might organise a club election by the
108. 6:15
Bella (tutor) book. The key is an established procedure. Also,
109. 6:19
Bella (tutor) check what the rules actually allow before calling an exception
110. 6:23
Bella (tutor) a rule break. A permitted exception can be part of the official
111. 6:27
     Bella (tutor) process.

Bella (tutor) make things fair, or create extra work? Ask
