Your or Yours: How to Choose

How do you choose your or yours?

Use 'your' before a noun phrase, but use 'yours' when the noun is understood and omitted. For example, say 'I like your new bicycle' but 'This bicycle is yours.' 'Yours' never comes before a noun, and neither possessive form takes an apostrophe.

Key points

  • Use 'your' directly before a noun phrase.
  • An adjective may come between 'your' and the noun.
  • Use 'yours' when the noun is already understood.
  • 'Yours' stays unchanged for one or several things.

The full explanation

Your is a possessive determiner. It introduces a noun phrase and shows who connects to the thing being named. Yours is a possessive pronoun. It takes the place of both your and the noun together. Possession in English extends beyond physical ownership to include relationships, scheduled turns, and personal responsibilities. For related pronoun work, review /micro-listenings/11-2/ and /micro-listenings/4-2/.

Please place your hot tea on the wooden coaster.

Why it works: Your introduces the noun phrase hot tea, where the adjective hot modifies the noun tea.

  • I finished my assignment, but yours is still on the desk.

Yours replaces your assignment and acts as the grammatical subject of the second clause.

  • These spare office keys are yours for the rest of the week.

Yours stands alone after the plural verb are to show ownership without repeating keys.

8 short steps, one check each

Identify whose lunch it is with your or yours

Two people place identical lunch containers on a shared kitchen table. One person needs to ask if the meal belongs to the other worker. Both your and yours connect an object to the person you are speaking with. You say your lunch when you name the item directly. You say This one is yours when the item is already clear from the situation. Grammatically, your is a possessive determiner because it introduces a noun, while yours is a possessive pronoun because it replaces the noun phrase. Possession in English also includes relationships and turns, such as your sister or your turn in line.

  • Is this your lunch on the table?

Why it works: Your comes directly before the noun lunch to ask about ownership.

  • No. Mine is in the fridge.

Why it works: Mine replaces my lunch to avoid repeating the word lunch.

  • Then this one is yours.

Why it works: Yours replaces your lunch because the container is already being discussed.

Your turn

In a kitchen conversation, which sentence correctly uses the word that names the container directly?

Show the answer

Answer: Is this your container?

Use your directly before the noun container. Yours never takes a noun after it, and you're means you are.

Use your before a noun, including an adjective plus noun

Use your when you are about to introduce a noun phrase. A noun phrase is simply a noun along with the words that belong with it. In everyday speech, an adjective often sits between your and the noun. If you only look at the single word right after the blank, you might make a mistake. Look ahead to see if the phrase names a thing. Whether you say your lunch, your hot lunch, or your plastic containers, your introduces the complete naming phrase.

  • Please put your hot soup on the counter.

Why it works: Your introduces the noun phrase hot soup, where an adjective describes the noun.

  • Did you leave your plastic containers in the sink?

Why it works: Your comes before the adjective plastic and the plural noun containers.

You can practise this again in Yours faithfully or Yours sincerely: How to Choose and Articles in English: How to Choose.

Your turn

Choose the correct sentence where a descriptive adjective comes between the possessive word and the noun.

Show the answer

Answer: I found your red folder near the printer.

Your introduces the noun phrase red folder. The adjective red sits between your and the noun folder.

Use yours to replace the whole phrase your plus noun

Use yours when you want to replace the whole phrase your plus noun. For this word to work, the listener must already know what item you are talking about from the conversation or physical scene. You can place yours after a linking verb such as be, as in This lunch is yours. You can also place yours at the start of a sentence as the subject, as in Yours is still warm. You can even make it an object, as in I can carry yours today. Yours does not need to sit at the end of a sentence.

  • This lunch is yours.

Why it works: Yours follows the verb is and replaces the repeated phrase your lunch.

  • Yours is still warm in the microwave.

Why it works: Yours acts as the subject of the sentence at the very beginning.

  • I can carry yours while you open the office door.

Why it works: Yours serves as the direct object of the verb carry.

Your turn

Which sentence correctly places yours at the beginning as the subject?

Show the answer

Answer: Yours is waiting in the lobby.

Yours can act as the subject of the clause because it replaces the entire noun phrase such as your package.

Keep yours unchanged but choose is or are for the thing

The letter s at the end of yours never indicates a plural number. Both your and yours work when you speak about one item or several items, and both work when addressing one person or an entire group. To make the sentence correct, match the verb is or are to the actual thing being discussed. Say This container is yours for one object, and say These containers are yours for multiple objects. You can also form paired questions and negatives: ask Is this your lunch? or Is this lunch yours? In negative statements, use This isn't your lunch or This lunch isn't yours.

  • This container is yours, but those boxes belong to the office.

Why it works: The singular verb is matches the single container.

  • These containers are yours to take home.

Why it works: The plural verb are matches the plural noun containers.

  • Is this lunch yours, or is it someone else's meal?

Why it works: A question form placing yours after the subject lunch.

Your turn

Which sentence correctly matches the verb to a plural noun using yours?

Show the answer

Answer: These keys are yours.

Keys is plural, so it requires the verb are. The possessive pronoun yours never takes an apostrophe.

Compare your and yours in a compact decision table

To choose between these two words, follow a simple decision procedure. First, identify the thing you are talking about. Second, check whether the noun for that thing is spoken in the phrase. If the noun or an adjective modifying it is present, choose your. If the phrase replaces the noun entirely, choose yours. Finally, confirm that your listener already knows which item you mean when you use yours. The table below organizes these structural differences across common sentence positions.

FormNoun Expressed?Sentence PositionExample
yourYes (noun or adjective + noun follows)Before noun phrase (subject)Your hot lunch is ready on the counter.
yoursNo (replaces your hot lunch)Subject of clauseYours is ready on the counter.
yourYes (adjective + noun follows)Before noun phrase (predicate)Did you leave your warm coat here?
yoursNo (replaces your warm coat)After linking verb (predicate)Is this warm coat yours?
yoursNo (replaces your plastic container)Direct object positionI can carry yours while you open the door.
  • Your fresh coffee smells wonderful.

Why it works: Your is used because the noun phrase fresh coffee follows.

  • This fresh coffee is yours.

Why it works: Yours is used because the noun phrase is not repeated after the verb.

Your turn

You want to say that a laptop belongs to the listener, and the word laptop is not in your predicate phrase. Which choice is correct?

Show the answer

Answer: This computer is yours.

Because the noun is not repeated in the predicate, yours stands alone after the verb is.

Remove possessive apostrophes and test you're with you are

Two frequent writing errors involve unnecessary apostrophes and misplaced nouns. Never write your's or yours' with an apostrophe; possessive pronouns in English never use apostrophes. Similarly, never write yours lunch, because yours already replaces the noun. Standalone your without a following noun, as in This jacket is your, is also incomplete. When you see you're, remember that it is a contraction meaning you are. Test your sentence by speaking the words you are out loud. If you are does not fit the grammar, choose your or yours instead.

  • You're scheduled to speak after lunch.

Why it works: You're means you are, which functions as the subject and verb of the clause.

  • Your schedule is posted on the wall.

Why it works: Your comes before the noun schedule to show ownership without an apostrophe.

  • That schedule on the wall is yours.

Why it works: Yours replaces your schedule and never takes an apostrophe.

Your turn

Which sentence avoids both apostrophe mistakes and noun duplication?

Show the answer

Answer: The blue notebook is yours.

Yours has no apostrophe and stands alone without repeating the noun notebook.

Hear weak your and the final /z/ in yours

In natural spoken English, your often reduces to a short, unstressed sound like /jər/ before consonants. In contrast, yours carries sentence stress more often and always finishes with a voiced /z/ consonant. Accents across North America, Britain, and Australia pronounce vowels and rhotic r sounds differently. In some non-rhotic accents, the r sound disappears unless a vowel follows. Do not rely on hearing an r to identify the word. Instead, listen for the noun phrase that follows your, and listen for the distinctive final /z/ sound that marks yours.

  • Put your bag on the shelf.

Why it works: Your reduces to a quick unstressed syllable before the consonant in bag.

  • The black bag on the shelf is yours.

Why it works: Yours ends with a distinct /z/ sound regardless of whether the speaker pronounces the r.

Your turn

What reliable listening clue distinguishes yours from your in connected speech across different accents?

Show the answer

Answer: A clear final /z/ sound and no following noun.

Yours always ends in a voiced /z/ sound and stands without a noun, whereas r pronunciation varies across accents.

Recall the choice by naming the thing or leaving its name out

Practice recalling the correct form by testing whether you speak the name of the object. When you name the object, your opens the phrase. When you leave the name out because the listener can see or understand the object, yours takes its place. Complete retrieval practice requires moving beyond passive reading into active self-testing. You must actively choose the form, explain the structural reason for your choice, rewrite sentences to swap forms, and produce an entirely new pair from memory.

Work through these explicit retrieval practice prompts to lock in your knowledge: Prompt 1 (Explain the choice): Explain aloud why we say 'Did someone move your bicycle?' but 'Did someone move yours?'. State the exact rule about whether the noun is named or replaced. Prompt 2 (Sentence transformation check): Rewrite 'I found your coat in the lobby' using 'yours' in the check below. Prompt 3 (Produce a new pair from memory): Without looking at any lesson notes, create an original contrastive pair of sentences from memory for an everyday object like keys or a phone, using 'your' in the first sentence and 'yours' in the second.

  • Did someone move your bicycle?

Why it works: Your is chosen because bicycle is explicitly named.

  • Did someone move yours?

Why it works: Yours is chosen because bicycle has been omitted and is understood by both speakers.

  • Is this your notebook? No, yours is on the counter.

Why it works: A contrastive pair produced from memory: your introduces the noun, while yours stands alone.

Your turn

How should you rewrite 'I found your coat in the lobby' to use yours correctly?

Show the answer

Answer: This coat in the lobby is yours.

Yours replaces your coat and sits in the predicate without a following noun.

Common mistakes

What learners often say, what to say instead, and why.

  • Not this: This is yours coat.

    Say: This is your coat.

'Your' must introduce the noun; 'yours' cannot be followed by a noun.

  • Not this: The spare ticket is your.

Say: The spare ticket is yours.

'Yours' stands alone after the linking verb; 'your' needs a following noun.

  • Not this: Those books are your's.

    Say: Those books are yours.

The possessive form 'yours' never contains an apostrophe.

  • Not this: Your are late for the meeting.

Say: You're late for the meeting.

'You're' means 'you are'; 'your' shows possession and cannot replace the verb.

Before you go

Remember this

Use your when the noun or an adjective modifying that noun follows directly in the phrase. Use yours when the word replaces the entire noun phrase and stands on its own. Remember that yours ends in a voiced /z/ sound, never marks a plural noun, and never takes an apostrophe.

Questions about "Your or Yours: How to Choose"

When do I use your instead of yours?

Use your when you state the noun right after it or right after a modifying adjective. Use yours when the noun is already known and you want to avoid repeating it. Your cannot stand alone without a noun phrase, and yours never takes a noun after it.

Your coffee is on the counter.

This coffee is yours.

Can I put an adjective between your and the noun?

Yes. An adjective often describes the noun that your introduces. You can place words such as new, warm, or heavy between your and the noun because your introduces the entire noun phrase.

I found your new keys on the table.

Please wear your warm jacket today.

Does yours mean more than one thing?

The letter s at the end of yours is not a plural marker. Yours can refer to a single object or to multiple objects. You change the verb from is to are depending on whether the noun referred to is singular or plural.

This container is yours.

These containers are yours.

Can yours come at the beginning of a sentence?

Yes. Yours can serve as the subject of a sentence as long as the listener already knows what object you are talking about. You do not need to push yours to the end of the sentence.

Yours is still in the oven.

Yours are sitting near the front entrance.

Is your's ever correct?

No. The spelling your's is always incorrect in English. Possessive pronouns such as yours, hers, ours, and theirs never take an apostrophe. Write yours with no punctuation inside the word.

The extra locker is yours for the week.

How is you're different from your and yours?

The word you're is a contraction of you are. It contains an apostrophe to show that the letter a is missing. In contrast, your and yours show possession and never represent a verb.

You're ready for your morning appointment.

If you're looking for a seat, this chair is yours.
