Adapt or adopt: choose the right verb

When you must choose between these two verbs in conversation or writing, focus immediately on what happens to the item. Individuals also adopt habits, such as taking a daily walk or writing a learning journal, by making a conscious personal decision to begin that ongoing routine.

Adopt possesses a distinct family meaning that adapt never shares. When adults become the legal parents of a child who was not born to them, they adopt that child.
