Hello, I’m Chris – the English teacher behind MicroEnglish.

I created MicroEnglish several years ago because I saw how much my students struggled with understanding native English speakers. The standard approach to teaching listening and the materials available just didn’t seem to be very effective.
In class, I had used my own dictation exercises for years and saw how this kind of intensive listening practice improved my students’ listening skills dramatically. I wanted to make these exercises available to learners everywhere, so I built MicroEnglish.
Today, thousands of English learners use MicroEnglish to develop their listening comprehension.
If you’re curious about why this approach is so effective, you can learn more about how dictations improve listening skills here.
About me
I’m originally from North Devon. This is in the South West of the UK, and it’s one of the most beautiful parts of the country.
After graduating with a degree in Philosophy from Cardiff University and a Masters in Latin American Development from the University of London, I moved to Buenos Aires in Argentina with my girlfriend (now wife) Lucy. This was where I taught my first English class, and I have been teaching ever since.
After a few months in Buenos Aires, Lucy and I moved to Bogota in Colombia. We lived there for a year and a half, and absolutely fell in love with the place.
After returning to the UK, we lived in the beautiful city of Oxford for several years, before moving back down to Devon. This is where we live now, bringing up our two young daughters.
In my spare time I love cooking, going for runs, watching Arsenal, going walking and wild camping, reading books, and listening to podcasts.
